Hi I am planning on buy an second hand car, and I was thinking of Vitara. maybe between 1999-2002 vitaras. Can anyone tell me how are they as second hand car? How much maintenace will be and do I have to put a lot of money for repairs after I buy one. THx for your help. :)

I bought my 1999 Tracker 2.0l 5spd in 2002 with about 34k on it.
I now have 67K and only have had to change the oil and air filter. They are great automobiles. As with anything though, if the person before you didn't take care of it you might have to fix some things to get it running perfect. I don't think that stuff costs an arm and leg, but some things could be pretty pricey.

Good luck and maybe get it checked out by a machanic before you buy if you can. Just to be safe. Later, Mike

I know 1999 and 2000 models have a number of similar problems, such as:
timing chain retentioners approx. $1000
Air Conditioning problems (dealer fixed one under warranty (owner didn't ask the root cause), another one leaks, mine hasn't been diagnosed)
Exhaust (y-pipe, this could get expensive if the oxygen sensors are broken when replaced - they're $200 a piece)
number of recalls
