Hiya, I just Bought a 1990 cherokee 2 door, I'm planning on lifting and tires and playing, I have a bunch of guys around here that do alot of mudding,
Here is my question, I told them I had bought a jeep, (as most of them are wrangler owners) and when I tell them I bought a cherokee all I get is chuckles? what is the deal here
I'm a long time Chevy guy and have owned several including an 86 Full size blazer with 8 inch lift and 40's and a built 454, so I'm no rookie to 4X4's but I wanted something to go play and not have to carry 10 cans of gas with me so I read up on, and purchased a cherokee,
is there something wrong with them that I should know about?

The Cherokee and the Wrangler have nearly identical suspension and drivelines, in any given year. The Cherokee is at a slight disadvantage off road given its slightly longer wheelbase, however, it is extremely rare to find a situation where this would be an issue. Its been proven over and over again a cherokee can go anywhere a wrangler can.
The cherokee is much more useful and comfortable on road and off, with more useable room, less noise, better on road handling etc.
For pure off road, the Wrangler has a slight edge. For on road and all around usefulness the cherokee is far better.
BTW I own a CJ and a cherokee. The CJ is parked all the time because its too much of a pain in the ass.

XJ also have the uni-body advantage in mud or water seeing as they "float" better than vehicles with a solid frame.

thanks for the insight guys, I was starting to think I had made a mistake buying it, the only reason I bought it was that almost every review of the cherokee was great from, road ride, to mud, to durability,
I just ordered a 4 1/2 lift, I have read some negative feedback on lifts, but this is going to be mainly a toy and to pull my boat and small camper so I think I will be fine

They are just doing that because you have the best of both worlds and they do not. I suspect they would do that if the situation was reversed!
Cheers,

Just ask your buddys where they carry all their gear??? I owned a 97' wrangler, and now own a 90' cherokee. My brother-in-law has a 98' wrangler, and I get stuck carrying all the gear ( maybe thats why they giggle ). Seats five, plus Action packer full of get un-stuck gear, hmmm who's laughing now????

I think when I get it done I am going to remind them of that when they want to use my 50 foot jerk strap chains and come-a-longs that I have room for in the back with my 33" full size spare......hehe, that will be a good one
