How much work is it to replace the clutch in a 1989 Civic SI?.....more importantly is it something an amateur should try?......Tks

It's not too hard - more time consuming. If you are familiar with tools, and have the tools it's not hard. You'll need a 32mm socket to remove your hub nuts for your axles, a ball joint breaker, and a clutch alignment tool so you can get the clutch disc aligned with the hole for the tranny (can't think of what it's called) rod i guess. The hardest part for me is getting the tranny back in and synced up with the engine - after that is a piece of cake.

ROTFL! you beat me to it :icon16:

gregc, if you're not afriad to try it then i say go for it! that will be a good way for you to get to know your car. it will also give you the confidence to do other work on the car, should it require maintance. just make sure you give yourself enough time. something always goes wrong when you rush.

How much time do you think is "enough time"? Is this a weekend job if you've got all the parts and tools? I'm asking because I know I'll have to deal with my clutch sooner than later (150k on original clutch). It's something I definately want to do on my own, for the reasons Ami mentioned.

cheers

it's hard to say what enought time is. i would assume a weekend (2 days) to be plenty. my y8 was the first swap we had done. it took us a couple of hrs to yank the engine. and then we spent a couple of hrs installing the new clutch and fitting the tranny to the y8 block. then we called it a day. the next day we took our time and installed it all back in.

doing a swap is a little more in detail than just a clutch

a lot of people say leave the engine in while replacing the clutch. i don't know what to say about that. my personal opinion is it's easier to yank it all. ask GTA what he thinks about trying to stuff in a tranny vs. dropping it all in at once. we dropped his z6 + tranny in with ease. turns out the tranny we got from somebody wasn't any good so we yanked the tranny out to put in GTA's stock tranny back in. it SUCKED stuffing the tranny in and then trying to line all the bolt holes up. i think jer might have invented some new curse words that night :grinno:

Taking only the tranny or engine/tranny out is pretty easy on a 4G. It's only what 3 more bolts to get the engine out & it's much easier to wrestle the tranny out of the car.. You should be able to finish is within 1 weekend, just dont rush. I don't know about you people but I can get engine/trans or engine out within 30minutes. To do the whole clutch job 1.5hrs w/ 20 min smoke break. I've also done it more times than I want to count. Have fun, just don't drop that bitch on your foot or head.

Speaking of that, 1 of our guys at the shop dropped a tranny from a eclipse(6ft in the air) & he tried to catch it, lol. Almost busted his fingers off when it hit the ground
