Ok I just recently took a job change. I went from selling parts for GM products to selling parts for Nissan and Infiniti... which is not a bad... parts are parts... but I really don't know shit about Nissan or Infiniti so when someone ask's me a question like "so do maxima's have problems with "insert part name here" I'm like well I don't know I'll have to ask. Anyway I'm learning a new carline and it is just being a total PITA right now. I am used to knowing almost every policy, part number, and procedure about GM but know nothing about Nissan or Infiniti. I didn't even know what NISMO stood for until today, just for an example. The group numbers (section numbers) for the catalog are all different and sometimes I feel totally lost at work but thankfully there are 16 other parts ppl there to help me when I get in a jamb but damn it took me 10 years to figure GM out and still yet I didn't know everything. I'm just beginning to wonder if I made a mistake by not taking the job at another Chev dealer for less $$. Oh well just venting, back to work tomorrow.

You'll be fine John, after all the crap you've been through this last year I have no doubt you can handle this little thing (even though I am sure it's frustrating as hell).

Well the parts director that hired me and moved me from Kansas to Arizona 4 years ago died of cancer a few weeks ago and the new director and I just didn't see eye to eye. So he fired me... to bring one of his buddys in. When I left I was making 58K a year doing wholesale cause we are paid on what we sell, well starting new at a totally different dealer I am only making mid 40"s a year so there were some lifestyle changes I had to make, such as selling the house and moving into an apt for awhile until I figure things out. Also my wife left me and thats another story... but I guess I just got burnt out on GM and since October of last year I just quit trying to please the dealer I was at and the new interim director noticed that right away and didn't give a shit about me even though I had senority over ppl there but he canned me. Guess the moral of the story is keep your personal problems to yourself and at home rather than taking them to work.
Anyway being here for 4 years I met a lot of people and made lot's of friends in the parts business so it was no problem getting another job in the same type line of work I was in at Chevy. I just didn't expect it to be another carline.

Thanks Dan, it will get better just going to take some time to find my groove, fortunately I deal with the same customers as I did with Chevy so that makes it a bit better but still... Nissan and Infiniti have weird catalogs for looking up parts. Yet again someday I will say damn GM has a weird way of cataloging their parts.

You will definitely get the hang of it.Do the best you can.Sorry about the wife.Even if you're making 40 a year, that's very decent.I could live like a semi-king on that.So keep trying.Nissan/Infiniti is a very good car company.Good luck.

being that i'm on my 5th nissan and 4th maxima i can tell you that the answer to that question is usually "yes, yes it does". especially if the last word of the question is "sensor" or "bose". it's rough being at a new job. new routines, new people, just the plain akwardess of being the "new guy". once the next new guy comes in you'll feel right at home and he'll be asking you for help

Blah, blah, blah. If you don't know the answer, just make something up, if you don't feel like searching for a part, just hand them a random box of something that you wrote the part number on that they need. :)

You'll cope man, it just takes time. I'm in parts too and it's a bitch learning new part numbers. Especially Bosch numbers, fark! 1-986-450-511 for a simple filter!

Yeah, well I didn't know what it stood for until about 2 years ago. :loser:
You'll be fine John. You sound like the kind of person who actually tries to do his job rather than just bullshit his way thru. You will adapt, you will divide and you will conquer.

I know how frustrating this kind of thing is. When i started work there were all sorts of abbreviations i'd never heard of before and i didnt have someone i could ask every 10 mins. If you have 16 people on your team im sure there's a lot of help at hand and you'll pick it up in no time :)

Hey man, you'll do fine in the new job. you sound like the kind of partsman that actually gives a damn about the job. As a mechanic, I have met about 5 guys like you in 20 or so years. The rest of them are just the basic tools I have to work with.
Good luck on the new job.

John, if TANGIE... the stupid girl who couldn't even drive her G20 when she bought it b/c she never learned how to drive stick... can handle learning a few part numbers for Nissan/Infiniti, then I KNOW you can. Just remember that the only thing that matters is SR20DET ;) j/k You'll be fine, and eventually, it does all come together. Keep your chin up, and you'll be spouting off Nissan parts like it's your job. :p

I'm sure you'll have gotten the hang of it within a month. And if anyone asks whether the 1991-1994 Sentras and 1991-1996 G20s have a problem with the blower motor resistor, the answer is YES. However it's a $20 part so I'd rather have a car with THAT problem than a car with a tranny problem. :)
I'm sure it's rough right now, but have no fear, you'll soon be wondering what was so difficult in the first place.

Tangie... come on I am sure you are not a stupid girl, believe me I know plenty of them..., you are into cars and bikes and that is way smarter and a better way to be than you're average Cosmo type girl.
And yes the SR 2.0L Displacement, All Aluminum, DOHC, MFI, Single Turbo Forced induction engine for the S15 Silva with 250HP and 202Ftlbs of tourqe... ( I think?) Yeah I am learning some things as I go, but still so (pardon the pun :sunglasse ) foreign to me.
Anyway thanks for the support everyone I made a few mistakes today like sending a shop the wrong power steering hose for a 99 Quest because there was a Service File on it and I did not know to check the build dates in the master book... oops. Well.., we learn from our mistakes and hopefully it will not cost us any business in the future.
I just hate it when ppl call and ramble codes and options at me and I don't know what they are talking about and I have to ask like.. duh I am stupid please say that again, but this time say it to me like you are talking to an idiot, hence give me your VIN number and the exact name of the part.
Sure if you want a 4wd actuator for a 97 Chev K1 with a L31, MG5, GU3, and NP5 I would say sure the PN is 26013495 and wouldn't even have to look it up. Dammit I can't wait to get there with Nissan and Infiniti, hopefully it does not take eight years though.
On the bright side I did learn an oil filter number today for most Altimas, 15208-9E000. Yeah I know big deal

:lol2: Thats so funny I use to work with a guy like that several years ago. He use to say "if ever you don't know what they are talking about or know what they need... just sell em something and usually they won't bring it back." Oh the memories... definately a fun business to be in and the people you meet are a plus most of the time.

Yep 3 posts in a row I am post whoring but its my damn thread and I can do what I want.
Thank you for the info boingo I will be sure and remember it, free and sound information is hard to come by these days. I guess really the thing that is hardest for me is the fact Nissan and Infiniti catalogs parts by different names than GM did. Just today I was searching for a "negative" battery "cable". The catalog was like :wtf: so I had to ask and Kenny he says yeah you need to go to this group, but I'm like what the hell do they call it though dude?, he says it depends on year and model, I'm like why can't they call it the same fn thing throughout the whole catalog?, he says, don't know?, any way they call it either a harness-earth, or cable-earth. Yeah GM just puts all the damn battery cables in two groups no matter what year model...2.342 for positive and 2.341 for negative and they actually call them that. Ahh just ranting everyone there is sooo nice though and they keep telling me just to hang in there and it will come as second nature like GM did. I am positive about it though.

OE parts are bastards. Aftermarket represent :D
I've only been in parts 6 months, so I know what its like to struggle with stuff. Just keep slogging at it, you'll learn :)
And if you get stressed, just borrow a 350Z and thrash the shit out of it as relief :)
