Audio Problem 2000 GP

I have an intermitent rear speakers audio problem. Speakers are good—I've tested them. During warm weather the rear speakers work. Any other time they go out.
I'm guessing the warm weather is making a lose connection, somewhere up at the radio tight and making contact. My question is: How hard is it to get to the back of the radio to check that connection? If anyone can give me simple disassembly instructions, that would be great!

Getting to the back of the head unit is a job of its own, you have to take the whole dash down (1 piece) and then fight to get the head unit out. Once you find all the screws to remove the plastic covering of the dash, then you should have no problem. Take your time, plastic cracks! I know for a fact.

Well to my understanding once you get out the dash plastic cover all you have to do is unscrew the radio from the dash and pull it. The connctor is there and you can do with the cables whatever you need to do

hey fellas, i install stereos professionally in a 1997+ grand prix there is a carpeted plate (by the drivers feet right above the pedals) that is held in place with two plastic clips you can remove this with a screw driver or a claw hammer if you dont have the tool to do it after that there are 4 screws that hold the lower plactic panel on (covers the fuse cluster,ETC) one you have that off, the rest of the dash plate that covers the stereo and gauge cluster pops off with a i think 5 clips holding it in place (you should just be able to pull it straight off starting by the TRAC switch first working counter clockwise and then clockwise). my guess is that you dont have a bad connection in the headunit but instead that it is wiring in the car. go to your local stereo shop and buy a jumper harness for an aftermarket stereo and use the leads and a nine volt battery to test the wiring in your car if the wiring is fine you will hear a scratching noise over the rear speakers. send me a PM if you have any other questions.

Hey guys, I actually found this forum by searching on Google about this exact problem. I just purchased a 2000 Grand Prix that has this problem. I noticed that the rear speakers weren't working when I test drove the car, and they said they would fix it for me. Sure enough they call me and tell me they're working (because it was warm enough when they tried it) and then when I picked it up, they still weren't working. Drove it the next day in the afternoon and they were working. So basically, the thing has been in and out of the dealership for the last week and a half because they can't figure out what the problem is since it's intermitent. Did anyone end up getting this fixed? It's really bumming me out. This is the first car I have purchased on my own and it'd be nice to have it so I could drive it. :( Any information is appreciated!

i had this problem on my 01 gtp... audio would cut in and out on the front speaker/tweeter on the passenger side and the rear speaker in the back. i took the door panel off and discovered some egghead from the factory put the speaker wire connecter around the arm that guides the window down so sometimes when you open/slam the door the speaker would come on/off or if you rolled down the window it'll cut out. so i'ld suggest pulling off your door panels and check those connections. just pull the screw covers off the door behind the pull part and i think a t45 torx bit to take the screws out then gently pull the door panel off the door.

Thanks for the info s_j, I still haven't gotten mine back from the dealership and they had it from Monday - Thursday of last week and half of the day Friday, and I took it back in this past Monday and they've had it ever since. I'm starting to get pretty pissed. :banghead:

Well I finally got my car back from the dealership, just thought I'd update. They ended up rewiring everything from the front to the rear speakers and they actually replaced the rear speakers that were in there with new ones. So far it's working great. Took awhile to get it fixed but I'm glad I did, now let's just hope it stays this way! :)
