If you are in California, there is a legislated testing system in place to enforce the accompanying 95dB noise limit. Sound has nothing to do with engine size. It has everything to do with tailpipe (anything past the exhaust manifold) resonance. Unfortunately, the California legislation puts the impetus on the owner to prove that their car is legal. So much for innocent until PROVEN guilty. Now we are assumed guilty if the officer took note of the exhaust noise. I've been nailed twice on this. Both were prior to the formalization of the California law (SB882 stands out in my mind, but I'm not dead sure on it). I went to court because Apex'i gave a sheet out with the purchase of their exhaust that shows the dB produced at each rev range on the test car with my exhaust (1995 Eclipse GS-X) which was 86.5dB peak. Yes, it is loud. No it is not illegal. Even before the legislation the general rule was 90-95dB depending on the area with no set way to test it. If you get it tested and you are over, then you are hurting and will have to pay for the ticket. Simple as that. If you are less than 95dB, then you get off with just court fees. This all assuming you are in California :)

i have no mufflers i am running straight pipe and it is a 4 cylinder. Its stupid b/c before i done this it had a sound anyway its a twin cam gt its gonna sound a little. the cop was a dick!!!! he said my pipes were to big and he didnt even look at them they are about 2 inches maybe bigger. guess ill see what happens at mandatory court appearence.

no i live in owensboro kentucky

thing that gets me i have had this exhaust for a year and have been pulled over for my turning signals b/c they were green that cop never said anything. i have had cops follow me a great ways and never pull me over its stupid why do they have to harass the people who have cars with modifications.

I have an 8 cylinder that had NO pipes at all for about 2 weeks. I was pulled over, and told to 'quiet it down'. He didn't really have anything on me, so I didn't do much about it. Of course, once I did put on pipes, a cat converter, and mufflers, it was just a sloud, since I have almost no emissions at all on it haha....

but the thing is how can one cop say its loud but another doesnt its messed up they need to make it where it can be tested but they wont. there are so many mustangs and trucks that are much louder but dont get me wrong i used to drive a mustang and i wanted a truck and i would of made it loud too.

but our law says you can not modify your exhaust in any way so i cant fight it b/c its not factory but whos car is? i dont think everyone who loses a muffler goes and buys a factory they get what they can afford and most of the time its not factory. they harass us here they need to worry bout other things were not hurtin no one.

but im not getting factory mufflers im puttin on flowmasters since it will quiet it down some.

That was the main reason that California made the legislation for the exhaust testing. Too much of that problem. One cop says nay, one doesn't care, and the judge says its all BS because he's a hobbyist too. The legislation didn't make the limit of 95dB, just how to enforce it.

I got pulled over for the same thing awhile back. I got in a long conversation with the cop and said it was street legal and that the store ensured that it was legit. He said he didn't think so. So I asked if he had a deciblemeter(calling his bluff) that we could measure it with. He didn't...obviously. So I told him that I would order a silencer...very sorrry...blah blah blah. I had the silencer sitting in my trunk...where it belonged. He let me off with a warning since he had nothing else he could screw me for.
Also, for the dumbass cops you can always tell them that meineke installed it(because they are only allowed to do legal installations or something) It worked for a friend of mine. He told the cop that it was legal, but that it sounded like he had an exhaust leak on one of his gaskets. The cop knew sh!t and bought it and let him go. Good luck with court though. Wish I had some tips for that.

yeah this cop didnt really now shit he said he tought i was tryin to avoid him when i pulled into the gas station right as he passed by b/c he tought he heard me downshift. then he asked this is a manual right and i was like ah no its an automatic. what a dumbass cops just like to harass the younger people with cars that have anything done to them it fuckin sucks but its still gonna have a sound im not puttin factory on it it wasnt on there when i bought it anyway.
Cops are stupid but if you say the wrong thing and piss them off they will try to find other things to get you for.

I thought it was kinda weird I had an old 85 chevy pickup that was a clunker so I got bored craweld underneath and cut the exhaust off at the y pipe. I drove like this for 6 months then decided to go buy duals which made it alot quieter and a week after they were done I got pulled over by a cop who wanted to know what I had on for mufflers cuz he loved the sound. I ended up selling that truck and bought an 88 gmc pickup which I immediatly put dual exhaust with glasspacks. I was constantly being pulled over because I was setting off car alarms and scaring old people and making little kids cry. I got my exhaust sound level tested and it turned out to be 103.4 db which is a little loud but I want to go louder just to piss off the cops.

i have my mufflers cut off but my cats are still there. it isn't too loud but is much louder and better sounding than my buddies who have no cats with flowmasters.
