temperature senser

Ive got a 97 528i and the outside temererature senser is not working. The display on the dash says -40 degrees even when it is not. What could be the problem. Could it be the display or maybe the senser. Does anyone know where the temp senser is so I can test it for problems.

the temp sensor is usually under the right hand side of the car just inside the front bumper.
