The mitsubishi satrion is an amazing car for its time. its got light weight, good looks and better than average performance. The only really big problem is finding one that is in good condition, which is almost impossible. They're old and they're pretty rare which makes it really hard to find a good one. BUt the starion is a good project car if you can find one with an engine, interior and exterior in good shape. definitely has potential.

definately a worth while project, and yes, a starion can be made to perform like there is no tomorrow.

well, i can tell you some about the starion because my friend just bought one for 1400 dollars. and ive worked on it.

the starion has so much potential out of the box. more than the 240sx id venture to say, the 2.6 in those things can handle mucho mucho horsepower with their strong truck-like bottom ends and low compression (boost!). the trannies are strong also, ive heard of over 800 hp going through it with no mods. reliable? i dont know, not many 800+ hp cars are.

the car is really balanced for having a full front drivetrain, it really hooks up out of corners with the 225's all around and large anti roll bars. good chassis rigidity also...for an 80's car that is.

last night we put a new exhaust gasket on it and while he did that i unlocked the wastegate and shortened it all the way. hehehe more boost for free! probably running high 14's now, and everything is stock except for the wastegate setting which is maybe 1-2 psi higher. the weakest part of the car is the turbo, but aftermarket vendors realize this and have made mainfolds and downpipes for the dirt-cheap-but-still-great garrett T3 and T4 turbos (or T3/T4 hybrid mmmmm). put a blow off valve on it as they didnt come with one (wierd...)

these cars are a great value, if i wasnt so into porsches i would definately get one as they are an awesome car for the money. hell, maybe once im out of college ill get one anyways, just for fun! i would highly recommend this car, especially if its your first sports car.

finally, just making an assumption from your screenname that you like preludes. this is a much better car for all out performance. you can't beat rear wheel drive in the performance department, whether it be in straight line speed or twisty carvin'. understeer sucks! keep the prelude for winter as that's where front wheel drive really shines.

good luck with whatever you get

Just wanted to comment on your opinion of the Starion. I don't recall what year you were referring to, but I own a 1988 Conquest (the sister car) and this is my second, and you are absolutely right on.

This car has huge potential, and just for the record, my '89 blew doors off of a porche 944s on a freeway on ramp in colorado, and sorry to say I never got a chance to see get his opinion. hehehe. but anyway, he probably would have been embarrassed anyway, seeing how a girl did that.

But the car has the looks and can back them up, if you take the time to bring her into the y2k, you have something that's a real challenge to anybody on the road. This car was out before her time!

Have fun guys, the car is rare, and most likely one of kind, a real eye catcher.

By the way, I bought mine for 2500, with 73,000k, spotless leather interior, minor body cancer on the fender flares, other that, she's in great shape, never been in an accident and totally stock right down to the 225x50x16 in the front and 245x55x16 in the rear.

We are ready to start bringing her into 2000's, and aftermarket is readily available.

Right on about the Starion being awesome. The turbo sure kicks and will waste a regular 944 in a straight line. I just cant believe my friend got so much car for so little cash.

Don't know if you'd blow the doors of my 944, my car comes stock with the exact same horsepower as the starion (190)....and mine is .1 liter smaller with NO turbo. also the 944 has quite superior handling stock with the perfect weigh bias and super super stiff chassis (1411 lbs front axle, 1411 lbs rear axle). maybe the 944 driver you raced sucked. or maybe the car you raced was really a regular 944 with an "S" badge...they are rather weak in the power department

main problem with the non-turbo 944's is power increase options are FAR more expensive (as all non-turbo cars are). the starion, like my saab turbo, can simply have any number of easy upgrades done and you have large horsepower gains.

hey, no hard feelings though but i gotta put up some defense! we should head to the track some day and test our abilities in the real world.

You'll want to do some head work if you want to make real power. The engine was based off of Mitsubishi's truck engine of the time. Dialing up the boost will obviously get you more power, but getting the head ported and polished is almost a must if you plan on making any kind of serious power.

You are very correct. My friend is planning on a new head very soon with much freer flow. good call

There's a website out there that has buku's of performance parts for the Starion. I know because i'm looking at trying to find a Starion/Conquest to build up. It's called Top End Performance, at www.racetep.com and they have everything from suspesion and exhaust upgrades to intercoolers, many different turbo kits for it, (14G, 16G, 19G, and T3/T4 hybrid setups) performance and replacement heads with non-Jet valves, and even three different performance engine options that they build up from your core. (Standard Street, Performance Street, and Stage 3 Street/Strip hi-perf.) The place is awesome, you should really go check it out.

I had a 89tsi and was a blast to drive. I loved that car, very fast handles great and of course the RWD was great with burnouts and such. I had 170,000 miles on it and sold it(tranny was going). But still it is a great car with a lot of potential if you do the right things to it, go to starqeustclub.com for more info.

my brothers got a starion, they are quick for a 4-cylinder turbo. werent many of em made becuase they never really got popular like the other cars in its time. I cant remember the name of the website but there is a company that deals with turbos and they did a starion project that runs 9 seconds. The only thing that i notice as a downside to them is the lack of parts there are for them, sure if you look in the right places you can find some good parts but its not like most others where you can go to a aftermarket shop and pick parts up right off the shelf, mostly everything has to be ordered.
heres the link to his car
