Rear brakes

Little help with rear brakes on 2000 caravan. How do you get the drums off. I suspect I have to back off on the shoes but not sure how it's done. Any help greatly appreciated.

I have a 99 caravan and I'd like to know the same thing. Mine has anti-lock brakes if that matters.

Sometimes they can really be stuck on there. Start pounding them with a hammer and trying to work them off is what have done on all my vehicals over the years...

Only thing. None of my vehicals ever had ABS.

So might want to hang on for a bit until someone who has experience with ABS posts.

abs has no difference on how to get the drums off. beat it with a hammer on the front of the drum. dont try from the back or you could warp the drum and get a brake vibration. if the brakes are metal to metal, then you may need to unadjust them. there should be a little oval rubber peice in the back. it if difficult to unadjust because there is a peice that only lets the adjuster go one way - adjusting it. you are supposed to use a brake spoon, but you can probably get away with a flathead screwdriver. i would really try everything you can before trying to unadjust them. if you turn it the wrong way, you will just make it so much harder on yourself. it also helps to get some penetrating oil around the middle. hope this helps

After removing the adjuster hole plug you need to feel for the adjuster lever with a long (@12inch or so) thin screwdriver. I find it easiest to get it between the "e" brake cable and the adjuster and just feel for the lever end beside the adjuster wheel. Push the lever just a hair away from the adjuster wheel and then using a flat screwdriver or adjuster tool, rotate the adjuster wheel until the drum comes off!

99 & 00 seems a little soon for a huge rust ring but it's possible. You have removed the the little speed nuts installed during assembly right? :evillol: Provided they're off, don't go get the biggest hammer you can find, grab a little ball peen hammer and whack the hell out of the face of the drum (where the wheel bolts on to) You're only trying to vibrate loose the rust around the hub flange and the lug studs. Once you see some rust cloud coming out give her a pull. work your way around all the lug studs first! If it's still giving you trouble there's holes in the face of the drum that are tapped for 8mm x 1.25" bolts. Do not use 5/16" they are not the same! Run some in there... it'll drag the drum right off. Good luck and be sure to check the wheel cylinders for leakage it is very typical on those.
