86 4runner starting problems

I have an 86 4runner that I just recently had the engine replaced. Everything was fine for a while, but lately Ive been having some starting problems. It starts fine in the morning or anytime its cold. Once I drive it for a few minutes it takes alot of cranking (20 seconds or more)to get it to start. Ive replaced about $1,500.00 in parts because the dealership says its one thing or another. This thing used to start on the first crank EVERYTIME. I've also noticed when I'm stopped for a while with the engine running that it puffs smoke (real lightly) when I take off again. Not sure if this is related or not. The dealership said it was 'dumping' fuel and had to have the distributor replaced, but that didnt work either......?
Can anyone help?

I'm also having starting problems... my 4runner was sitting out all winter (a Toronto winter I might add), and now won't start for me... It was pretty embarrassing as I was trying to sell to someone and they came to see it but the truck wouldn't start! :banghead:

Did you figure out what was causing the problems with yours???

If so please write me!

Thanks,
Mike

Problems with starting hot might be your oxygen sensor.

My 89 V6 developed a hard start symptom when I picked up my vehicle from the Toyota dealership. The head gaskets and timing belt were replaced by the dealership.I found that it would take a few seconds longer for the engine to start.(hot or cold)What I eventually found out was that the start injector time switch was at fault. This switch controls the length of time that the cold start injector open up to allow the extra fuel into the intake. The switch is also temperature sensitive. The warmer the engine, the shorter the length of time the injector remains open. This problem did happen a few years back,so I may not remember exactly the fine details of the symptoms.Once the switch was replaced,it was back to normal.I hope this helps.

check your fuel rail for pressure. You may have leaking injectors which allow the gas to leak into the cylinders giving you a floded condition.
On hot starts try holding the gas pedal to the floor while cranking and release it immediately upon catching. Gas in the cylinders will wash away the oil on the cyl walls lowing the compression during starts.

...just a guess

I have a 91 SR5 that has decided not to start on several occasions lately, always when the engine is cold. The battery is only 4 months old, however I had the parts store check it and the alternator and they said both were fine. Could I need a new starter or should I check other things first? When mine decides not to start, it makes NO sound when I turn the key. Any ideas?

HeartAcres - Probably the starter contacts. That is a common problem. Replace the contacts. Cheap fix. You can also buy the contacts from Toyota.

Thanks, Brian! I will check into doing that (even though I am mechanically challenged ... grin)

I'm not that familiar with 91 model, but if it is similar to my 89, there should be a starter relay that gets energized to put power to the starter solenoid.I am assuming that when you turn the key to the run position that the warning lights illuminate and when you turn to the start position, nothing happens. You could also check to see if any power is going to the starter solenoid, and if not, work back to the relay.Another item to check would be the neutral safety switch. If a standard,it should be attached to the clutch pedal. It most likely is adjustable and could be loose or out of adjustment. As for an automatic,I don't know
where it's located.On the transmission I guess?
If nothing illuminates when the key is in the run position, then you should check fuses and circut breakers.

Yes, when I turn the key to the run position all warning lights on the dash are lit and the radio even plays; the engine just makes no sound. I guess I am going to have to get a schematic or something to know where all of these things are that I need to be checking now. Is there a place online to download one or should I just go buy a Toyota book at the parts store?

Just remove the starter and replace the solenoid contacts. It is a very common problem and cheap. It is uncommon for the starter relay to malfunction.
