I found it on the net once before, for the life of me I can not find it again nor remember how :(

It went somthing like this in cobination with pressing down on the gas pedal and toggling the ignition switch would cause it to reset the light.

Anyone?

if you wan tto reset the light, then disconnect the battery overnight and it will clear the computer.

I know about the battery trick silly to do that not that its a lot of work to get the terminal off, but then there is reseting the clock, and presets ;)

I will keep digging so I can share the info when/if I find it.

I agree it will prob come back on I havn't even check to see what is tripping it might very well be a sensor.

The service light came on when the bulb went out, this is how I found out about the trick.

According to your profile, you have a 99 grand am. So I'm not sure if this will work, but it worked on a 96 & a 98 (both the same model basiacally) so the names may be a bit different, here is what I do:

Inside your engine compartment, there is a fuse box, within that fuse box, is 12 fuses (approx) 6 HUGE ones, and 6 tiny ones (like in your driver side fuse box in your car).

Of the tiny ones, you can see on the side of the case what each is. Here is what you want to do:

1) Turn your car to the 'on' position, but don't start it.
2) Go into your engine compartment fuse box, and pull the "PCM BAT" fuse (should be a 10a fuse, red)

DON'T WORRY, there is very little voltage going through this, you won't get a spark!!

At this point, your headlights should come on. Ignore it.

3) pull the "IGN MOD" or "PCM IGN" or something simular, it's another tiny fuse, should be a yellow 20a fuse... but may be different. Either way, it will be the only tiny fuse with "IGN" in the name.

At this point, you will hear a small 'click' inside the engine.

4) Wait 5 - 10 seconds
5) Re-insert the 20a fuse for the PCM IGN/IGN MOD to the right spot.

At this time, you should hear another small 'click' inside the engine.

6) Re-insert the 10a fuse for the PCM BAT to the right spot.

At this time, your fuel injection system should kick in, and you should hear it fill up with fuel (like it would when you turn the car on in the first place)

7) Replace the cover for the fuse box, an turn the car off. Now, start your car. The Check engine light should be gone.

I know that these instructions are long-winded, but I wrote them so there should be no questions remaining after you do it. :) It should be pretty easy to follow, and should take less than 2 minutes to do.

I hope this helps you out! :)

That may work to remove the light for a awhile but it WILL return because there is something wrong , I would only use that trick if I was gonna have the car apraised so the apraiser doesnt use the light as a way to reduce value of the car. However a real apraiser will drive the car for 30 minutes and that should be plenty time for the pc to pick up the problem and put the light back up. Phone around for a free diagnostic check on your cars , youll be amazed to find that some will do it for free. If its a cheap easy fix , do it yourself. If its not worth the botherthen do the light removal every day till you get sick of doin that as well , its just a light. My ses lights been up for 2 years , I know its cus i removed my cat and res and entire pipe system. All I need is to get a O2 simulator but they arent available in my location , I ordered one from the states and it just keeps back ordering. I am sorry for the blah blah.
