New paint job

Hmm I havent found too much on experiences of gettin a new coat...so maybe someone will have a story? :)

Is there some type of "restorer" that would make the original paint looking better?

If I needed to get the car completely re-done...what would be a good suggestion of how many coats it needs/time/costs involved?

Is there any way you can get a pic of your paint up close? It's really hard to tell you anything without seeing it in the first place. How bad is it? Most all the G20's I've seen have had really durable paint except for the occasional chip.

Yah i'll see if I can get one tomorrow when the suns out. The paint actually isnt that bad...

I have a few chips here and there, but when you look at it the right way in the sunlight, you can see like watermarks that I cant buff out and also fine "circles" i dunno if this has to do becuase of the clearcoat?..

I also have watermarks that came on my car from the dealership.. They are really annoying and bug me everytime I see em

If you have a "haze" or foggy look to your paint - especially if it's dark, I would try "Scratch Out" which is in a yellow bottle and doesn't hurt clear coat paint - if you can't find that, use Meguiar's Scratch remover stuff - it's in a squeeze tube. Both are good for filling in little scratches and making clearcoat look good, and they remove the hazy look from your dark paint. Since my paint has spent 10+ years outside I do a pre-wax with one of these every time I wax. Also I would use a polymer-based wax instead of the Carnuba variety because the polymers are so much more durable. They ruin shop towels though.

You could try taking it to someone who grooms cars and ask them to use a buffer etc to see what it looks like and to see if he can remove the water marks etc.

If your paint is in fairly good shape and you don't have any dents, you shouldn't need a new paint job. I would recommend you invest in an orbital buffer, a high quality wax and sealant (such as Klasse or Blackfire), a few clay bars, and a weekends worth of elbow grease. If you really want to know how to make your car look good check out the Autopia forums (http://autopia-carport.com/ForumIndex.htm). Go to the Detailing forum and read through some of the back posts. There's a lot of info on here about how to bring your paint back from the dead and how to keep it nice once you do. Now, if you have a buttload of rock chips (like me) and/or a big-ass dent (like me) then you'll prolly be better off getting a new paint job. Just don't skimp and go to the local Maaco. A quality paint job takes a lot of time and energy to get right. If you don't prep the surface properly you'll end up with a paint job that looks like crap or that starts to peel off within a year. If you do decide to get the whole car painted, i'd figure on ~$1500 for a decent paint job. If i were you, i'd try to fix the paint you've already got.

a good paint job should be somewhere around 23-30 coats. time depends on the place your getting it at, but averaging around 3 weeks to 2 months. if you get a new color, it will be somewhere around the range of $2000 USD. same color would be around $800 USD.:D

Not trying to sound as dumb as I am, but why would a fully new paint job be different for a new color than the same???

Seems like it would be more because wouldnt they have to strip off all the paint? Or if not, they would have to make sure the old color isn't seen through the new coat.. which shouldn't be hard to do so dunno :confused:

I'm considering repainting my car to a 'metallic' color...has anyone repainted their car to a different color? How much did it cost and how long did it take? Anyone in So Cali had their car painted? If so, what are some shops that do quality workmanship? I had my front lip, bumper, and hood repainted at P.J. Bonifacio in West Covina and I believe I didn't get the quality I expected from them...waste of money...I don't want to do that again :mad: :bloated: thanx!

Metallic paints like blue and forest green especially silver are more expensive. The cheapest colors to have a car painted is black and white. Shops charge more for the amount of metallic in the paint. Also prices vary because of labor and/or mechinery. The best way to find a good shop is to ask them to show you a book of past customers. Sometimes they will let you call them (which I did for my cousins Acura). Sometimes they have demo cars and such. Some paint by hand and some have factory-like arms that sweep paint your car. This is not a good place to cut corners (paint job). Like most things, you get what you pay for.

exactly, well it is a lot of work to strip it down to the metal. if its the same color, they dont sand it all the way down, only to the primer. different color they have to use matching primer as well, which requires more work and work = money :eek:
