Catylitic Converter Problem?

I heard that the Cat Converters can get excesive buildup in them after time and cause some overheating problems due to the exhaust backing up into the engine. My car seems to be running pretty hot (always around the AL in Normal) and the check engine light comes on every time i use hard throttle and then goes out after a few seconds, which I assume is the Oxy sensor tripping from the extra exhaust. I also heard this was a recall on the V6 models. Can anyone tell me if the've had similar problems and how much it might cost to get my Cat Converter checked?

Anyhelp or input would be appeciated....
(Oh and, I tried pulling the cat converter myself and it was a little too much work for me)

Yes, there was a recall on the V6 models. Mine has been replaced 3 times under warranty. Catalytic convertors carry a 8 year/80K mile warranty on them. I decided to just ditch the cat completely and weld in a straight pipe.

gutted my 98. It wasn't too hard but I had to cut the pipe with a sawsall. As far as temp thats where mine always seems to run. I'm thinking of putting is an aftermarket fan control to try to bring it down a little.
