I have a 78 RS with 377sb that puts out 350-375HP and +400ftLBS. IT has a Turbo 350 w/ shit kit and torque converter. Only problem is I have a 10-bolt posi w/ only a 3.08:1 gears. A buddy has a bone stock 2002 LS1 w/ 6-speed he said he would smoke me in a drag race what do you think.

Well you have more hp and torque than he does, so you have him there. He's got a weight advantage on you, so he has you there, plus he's got better gears than you do, so he's got you there too. Now, his hp depends on if he's got a Z28 or an SS. I think it would be a good race. I'd give it to the 2002 for the gears and the weight.

Ya man. I agree with what 1992RS said. In a straight dragrace, the gears you have are TERRIBLE, but your gears are decent highway gears and pretty easy on gas mileage.. I you wanna feel a big difference drop a lower gear in it... I recommend a set of 3:55s because they wont absolutely kill your gas mileage and they will make a HUGE difference.. (i went from 3.08s to a set of 355s in my nova) or if you want something a little more drastic, yet streetable, Iwouldnt recommend anything over a set of 373s unless you have a manual tranny, or overdrive :). Anyway, like it is now Ibelieve the Ls1 would take you, but maybe a set of 355s and definitely 373s, youd get him in the 1/4.

In a few weeks I am looking at getting a new rear end w/ disc brakes and posi. I'll probably go with a 3.73 or 3.55 gears

actually, not that its a huge factor, but the earlier camaros were lighter. i remember that 89iroc threw up a post asking the question and the response was that they are lighter, but i can jump onboard with the rest of it. it would be a killer race, you should do it...

Well from the NADA website the 78 weighs 3425lbs and the 2002 weighs 3574lbs, so I guess I was wrong, but I don't think that 150lbs is going to make much of a difference. So I guess wieght isn't a factor. But the gears are deffinatly a factor. But, you have anywhere from 20-70 hp over him depending on wheather or not you have 350 or 375 and wheather he has a Z or an SS. So depending on what the hp difference is I think it could possably overcome the gear factor. In any even it'll be a hell of a race and if you don't come out on top you'll be right on his ass the whole way.

Oh, and either eay you look at it, you have 50-60 ft-lbs of torque over him which is in your highly in your favor.

well they say that every 75 to 80 pounds is a ten of a sec, dont know how much of a difference that would make, but i stand by my statement that it would be an excellent race and i would enjoy watching it. GO RUN HIM!!!...
