94 Ford Escort speedometer/odometer

The speedometer and odometer on my 94 Escort Wagon went out today. There seem to be no other troubles, but the odometer doesn't advance and the speedometer stays at zero. I have the Haynes manual for it, but it gives no help except instructions on replacing the speedometer cable.
