Heated Debate

Ok, long story short, my dad and I have been arguing on cone filter vs. stock filter. We have to prove to one enother which one is better. Thats just how all this got started.
We should all agree that the car will have the least amount of air restriction with no filter or box. (Yes, this is not going to happen for an extended amt. of time. I know that a car must have a filter). What we did was put on both a sensitive vacuum guage and a sensitive pressure guage on the tube going into the intake. We then drove the car down the highway at 70+ mph and then at slower speeds. The car was at both low rpms and at high rpms. We did this both with the filter and the airbox on and then with nothing on. After doing both things, neither guage showed a vacuum or a pressure. The question is... why? Why was there no vacuum or pressure with the filter on or off? Does this tell me that technically there is no difference in filters (box vs. cone) and that all this "high flow" stuff is nothing but bull? Hope this makes sense to someone. Thanx!!

cant really tell ya, there should be some sort of reading if there is a sensitive guage on it. there is a difference between high flow intakes, as proven by the dyno. why your guage dosnt show a differenec, i dunno.

maybe something is wrong with your gauge?

nothing wrong with the guages. to show how sensitive they were, you could suck just a little on the vacuum and it would go over half way and if you blew lightly into the pressure it would go off the scale

a better way to test it is to do like the K&N commercial and build a box that house the filter and a tall clear tube behind the filter. stick a vacuum up to some kindof air port and see which works better. ive stuck my hand on a car when it was revving and i dont think it produced too much vacuum. dont really know what to tell you, but you need a more controlled test environment...

There is a trick to the filter and the ball trick. They had it set up at the Auto parts store and I was playing with it. On the back of the display, there is a place to allow air to come it. You can open and shut it to control where the ball goes. But besides the point, I still believe in K&N filter.
Does anyone have an idea to prove which is better, stock replacement with a K&N or just a cone filter. (Don;t tell me dyno) THanks!!

well u say that he needle is very sensitive that it go crazy by blowing on it. maybe it just couldn't handle going 70mph. my friend has a civic and he tore off the intake. i put my hand against the screen and he reved and it did suck my hand in not real hard but u could feel it.

Shouldn't you be able to choke it like that? I was spraying Intake cleanerin my TB while playing w/ the butterfly valve, and when it was closed, there is just two tiny holes for the air to go through, and when the spray hit the holes, i hear the enigne slightly start to stall, so i'd imagine if i covered them longer than a second it would, but maybe it's just cause my Cash hungry v8 needs so much air as well.
