i have a 98 4.3 extended cab. it has 198k miles on it. Real bad vibration. i've gotten the drive shaft professionally rebuilt and balanced. don't know what my next step is. the tires are all wearing fine/even. i've rotated and balanced all the wheels. i did't know if this was a common problem with sonomas and s-10s.
any help?
thanks in advance

Have you had the Transmission Inspected? the vibration you could be feeling might be shudder... Does it vibrate all the time or at different speeds?
Just an idea.

it viberates all the time. it doesn't really seem to get worse with speed. but it does make your hand go numb on long trips! LOL

I have a 98 Sonoma ext cab with a bad vibration problem as well. But I have the 2.2 engine? I suspect the drive shaft bearing, near the middle of the truck, might be the problem since this would be the only commanality between our two vehicles? Has anyone heard of that before? The vibration is most notible when I am lugging the engine in 3rd, 4th or 5th gear at various RPM's, 2000 - 3500
3/25/05 The vibration is in the entire vehicle. It can be felt through the seat as well as rattling the doors and windows. The steering wheel and shifter seem to have normal vibration, more pronounce through the seat, which is why I was leaning towards drive shaft, universals or that drive shaft bearing. The bearing has a rubber mounting and that has some breaks in it on the bottom side. Don't know if that is normal or not?

We need some more details. What vibrates? The steering wheel, your butt, or you said your hand goes numb? Does this mean you have a manual shift trans, and the shifter knob is vibrating? If it's in your steering wheel it is in the front end. Maybe alignment, tires are wearing weird or out of balance, or something in the front end is broken or worn out. If it's in your butt it's something in the rear end. Could be your rear end, could have a bent driveshaft, bent axle, tires could be wearing weird, or something else could be worn out. If it is in your shifter knob, I'm not too big into manual trans, so I wouldn't be too sure. But the point is, there are alot of different things that could be wrong, and alot of different fixes. So if you want the right fix, and do not want a bunch of post that don't help, try to put as much detail into your post.
Hope it helps.

I have some new information on my vibration problem. I have just removed 400 lbs of weight I had in the back for the winter and the vibration is diminished. It will start to vibrate now in 3rd gear at around 3000 rpm and then when I shift into 4th it will vibrate around 2000 rpm, then it will vibrate in 5th gear most of the time. The vibration is still only when I am giving the truck the gas. When decelerating it is ok. This all still leads me to belive I have a problem with the drive train. Any thoughts? Thanks
