I tried to inspect the rear brakes on my 2000 galant but I couldnt get the rear drums off with reasonable effort.

Do they just pull off. Mine wont. I tried tapping with a hammer but they are on tight.

Whats the trick?

I had the same problem on 1995 Galant. I used big hammer, knocking few times around the drum.

carry it to a mechanic

so i carry it to a mechanic so I can pay him the $30 he quoted me to inspect the brakes plus the $89 dollars for the brake job (necause he obviously cant put it back together and let me drive away like that because of insurance reasons) and another $5.00 for shop supplies and waste 2-6 hours of work time @ $20/hour dropping it off/picking it up and/or waiting.

Or, I can just do the rear brakes myself for $25 - $30 (parts cost for Wagner line) using an hour of my free time on a weekend just as I have been doing on my own cars for the past 25 years.....

I just wanted to make sure the drums pull off like the majority of drums and i havent purchased the factory service manual yet. I actually consider myself a mechanic after buildingand swapping several motors, transmissions, numerous brake jobs, suspension work and other mechanical work.

Just that when you attempt to do something easy like pulling a rear drum and it sticks, sometimes it better to ask the question before wailing on it with a bfh.

In fact, I actually worked as a mechanic for a couple of years while I went to college.

There is two screw holes on the drum. Go purchase two machine screws that fit the holes and tighten them intermitantly and the drum will pop right off. Hope that helps
