timing cover centering tool

On my '90 2.2L, im trying to put back on the timing cover but can't seem to get it to center properly, the chiltons manual says to use a specialized centering tool, which seems to be hard to find, so i was wondering if any one has dealt with this problem before? and if there is something else i could use in place of the centering tool?
