Started building an MDF floor for the hatch/back-seat area. This time, I built a wood frame for the MDF so that it would be nicely supported. Last time I didn't, and the weight of the battery made it sag really bad. Plus, this time it will all be secured to the car... These pics are after about 15 hours of working on it. Still have to make another "floor" for where the back-seat used to be, should be doing that tomorow. Turning out very nicely. Once I'm done building it, all the MDF will be covered in carpet, and it'll look fucking nice! I'm stoked.

looks cool and all, but whats your purpose for it? what happened to your custom sub enclosure?

looks cool and all, but whats your purpose for it? what happened to your custom sub enclosure?

It's purpose is so that the sub enclosure has a place to sit (where the back-seat used to be) and so that the back end of the car isn't stripped out and poopy looking. The sub enclosure project is in it's design stage at this point, and the fiberglass speaker pods for the back are on-going as well. I also need to finish the fiberglass speaker pods for the front doors too.

The rear speaker pods, the MDF floor, and the front speaker pods should all be done well before may, but the sub enclosure may take some time, so I can't say for certain when it will be done.

Did a bunch more work on the MDF floor project today, mostly working on the wood-frame above the back seat area. I'm hoping that if all goes well, it will all be done tomorrow (with the exception of the carpeting and some other trick-shit that I just came up with today).

Since I'm adding so much weight to the car, there's really no hope for it to race at all, but I still plan to drop the y8 in it, but that project may not get started until mid-summer or so. Wish I could get it done for may, but that's being extremely optimistic.

Thanks.

I decided a long time ago that it's alot cheaper to do everything myself than to have someone else do it, even if I have to buy new tools and stuff to do it, plus it's alot more satisfying knowing that I did it all, and nine times out of ten, I'm learning a new skill (e.g. fiberglass work) which can be usefull.

Unfortunately, the sub box is going to be held up because the amp-rack will be built in, and I don't know what amp I'll be using and I don't have the money to get one right now, but the amp rack is going to be designed around the amp, so I'm at an impass as far as that project is concerned. I would love to get a JL 500/1 if I can find a good deal.

A few more progress pics... couldn't finish completely today, but about all I have left to do is make a template for the front floor area (above the back seat, and then cut it. Then just some carpeting and I'm done. Picked up some trunk liner today...

Finished up the front end of the wood frame and made the front piece:

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/25866smFloor021.jpg

re-routed the wiring for the battery... used some plastic grommets which will look nice with the carpeting:

And my absolute favorite piece that I did today:

So, it's ready for amp wiring... :) Turned out sweet.

That looks awesome - I'm getting ready to redo mine, but haven't got the design completely figured out yet. But I'm planning on putting a few tools back there and a spare tire, just trying to make everything fit the way I want. Awesome work!!!

I am thinking about doing the same for my 6 gallon chrome air tank and my 2 Viair 550C's, put it under glass, some neons in there, big pimpin eh? ;) *sorry I just like that look :( *.. I may just carpet it all, but I'd really like to learn how to fiberglass. Does anyone have any links to where I can possibly learn how, and/or links to places where I can buy some fiber glass materials?

Yep... I'm making a spot for the tools, which I'll get some pics of when it's done. Should turn out very cool... (Plus another little surprise I thought of yesterday).

And Shaddr3, I'll post some links for you tomorrow. Right now, I'm worn out, heading to bed for a few hours before I gotta get up and go to work, but basically, I've pretty much had to learn fiberglassing on my own... none of the how-to's I've found on the topic really covered everything. Be prepared to do ALOT of sanding.

Later y'all...

Ci5ic your set up looks awesome!

I hope you don't mind if I have used some of your ideas. If I can manage it I will post pics of my new rear speakers enclosures I built out of fiberglass. I think they look awesome. I am also planning on switching out the back floor to MDF like you have as well.

I'd love to see how you are mounting the amps. My car came with an amp mounted under the seat. I'm planning on moving it to the back of the car as soon as my wiring kit comes in. I'd like to move my battery to the back of the car like you have done as well.

Great job! I plan on keeping my rear seats, but other than that your car is an inspiration for me. :iceslolan

That sounds sweet, I'd love to see pics of your rear pods! As it is, I'm not completely satisfied with the design I used for mine and I may end up re-doing them at some point, so it would be cool to see some other ideas and how they worked out.

As far as how I'm mounting the amp, it will be mounted to the sub enclosure, but until I actually get an amp, I can't fully design the enclosure yet.

And last but not least...

Should get to work on the rear section of the floor tomorrow. Going to kinda suck though since I have to shave about 1/8" off of each edge of the hole as well as off of some of the outer edges. Will post pics if I do anything.

No problem... I had a thread about that stuff in Audio/Security a while back anyways.

Did some more carpeting yesterday. This carpet is pretty easy to work with and I'm really liking the results:

I've got a little bit in the doors, some where the back-seat used to be, and some in the very back around the spare-tire well. Really did quite the ride up pretty well, especially since I'd gotten so used to the road noise while having the back-seats stripped out, etc.
