Hey guys (and gals),
I am new here and really like this site. I do have a question for ya'll. I just bought an 88 Dakota with the 3.9 V6. It runs great, except for at idle.
I have replaced: cap and rotor, plugs and wires, PVC valve, fuel filter, and the air filter. I bought a Haynes manual and checked the EGR operation per the book, and it checks out fine. Also set the timing to 10* BTDC. I searched the forums and can not find the same problem.
What else should I check for? I have an Auto Xray, but there is no port to plug into. I check for codes and the computer did not have any.
Help!
Thanks, Thomas

Yeah IAC valve or throttle position sensor is what I would replace.

IAC, TPS, Stepper, O2 sensor.
Vacuum leak.
At least One of them!
No codes? Are you sure? Did you get 5/5?

That's a 1988 truck though. Did OBDII go that far back? I thought the key code thing began only as far back as 1996?

88 sure has OBDII if fuel injected . At least I know for sure '89 did and full size trucks did '88-on with FI and 3.9/5.2/5.9 L engines.
Mopars have had the computer codes and the same way of checking them as far back as '87 that I'm sure of, on the 2.2/2.5L and Caravans. Trucks had to wait for FI first, I think maybe that was '87? My '86 has a SMEC, but doesn't do the flashes...
But hey, I could be wrong!, or the '88 could have been made in Mexico with used '72 Dart parts like the Ramchargers...! (Ok,... I owned one... that's not funny....!)
