95 cutlass, 3100 getting hot, help!

i did some trading and got a 95 cutlass with a 3100 from a buddy. they quit driving it cause he said it would get hot some days and some days it would be fine. one day he was driving and it got hot but he was about 2 blocks from work and kept going and it shut down pretty much as soon as it got hot. he tried to start but it wouldnt. his father n law went to get the car 2 hours later and it started up and he drove it home about 10miles away. I havent talked to his father n law yet to see how the car did but he made it home and it hasnt been driven in about 6 months. I am not real good at cars, i know a little but not alot, so i am asking for a opinions on what it can be. i am sorry for the long post but tried to give as much info as possible. thanks for any help on this.

does anyone have any ideas?
