i have a 1987 maxima which has been driving perfectly since i purchased several years ago as well the earlier the day it stopped. after driving the maxima around town running perfectly i attempted to start it up for a trip and it would not idle. it will start, but then stumbles off. at times i can push gas pedal to keep it running a little longer, but eventually cuts-off. i have checked all connections i can imagin to check. wondering if it could be bad gas as i did fill it up the night before the problem then drive it approx. 8 miles then the problem occured. any ideas would be greatly appreaciated. just seems as gas is not passing to the engine or it is out of gas. the lines and filter are okay.

Well, you said you already checked the fuel lines, so I would say it could be the fuel pimp, my Taurus back in the day had the same problem.

thrasher is right ... it's the fuel pump that needs to be change....

i assumed the pump was working because when i turn the ignition key to ACC. i hear the fuel pump turn-on. does this not actually mean the pump is in working order? is there a way to check the pump before replacement?
thank you for the responses.

The pump is working if you're able to drive it, just not working correctly.
