Brake Pads

Ok i am thinking about replacing my brake pads...why?...because they suck and shoot sparks under heavy braking. I was wondering what kind of pads you guys would reccommend. Whats the best bang for the buck. OEM pads for the fronts are $70 from the stealership and $55 for the rears. But if i can get better pads for around the same price or the OEM parts cheaper let me know guys. I wouldn't mind going with something better then stock ones. Right now i'm pretty sure i have :apuke: :apuke: autozone pads.(not sure they were put on by the previous owner)
Any prices, links, or info would be greatly appreciated.

Actually most brakes will shoot sparks. This is the metal in them.

I ahve had very good luck with VGX pads for the G20. I got mine from Summit Racing. They are relatively cheap, and work well. they also come with caliper grease, and new hardware to go with them.

I think they were around $55 a set.

Ugh, why not? That makes no sense.

A friend of mine uses those "Green stuff" pads on his Civic (gasp!) and they seem to work nice. I'm concidering getting some since mine are almost down to nil :)

Endless has brake pads for street use. They're over $100 and I'm pretty sure they have to shipped from Endless Japan.

Jay- I had issues with my VGX pads on the track, they would fade VERY easily... They were the VGX silent Silver pads.
I am currently running metal master pads and I like them so far. Once they are broken in the initial bite is nice, and they are pretty fade resistant (or at least much more so than my VGX Silent Silver's were) under heavy braking. They make some noise under light braking at low speeds, but only some time (only happened a couple times so far)... most of the time they are totally quiet. Nissan pads are good for street/light track use too.

Endless stuff is here in the US...my local shop gets endless stuff but very expensive...

i can get Endless and Project Mu and Brembo pads but all very expensive. I actually thought the Stillen brake pads are quite nice...pretty good on the tracks as well with minimal brake fade.

Folks should be careful selecting pads however. Most performance pads require some heat in them for them to work OK. I personally don't like the Axxis pads. The first couple of stops in the morning can be disconcerting (at least for me). I have them on my SE-R but haven't tried them on my G20.

I am still very much a fan of the OEM pads. In my experience they worked well cold and do a fine job. For track use, I'd get different pads. Actually since I only put the car on the track once a year I even use street pads and just take it easy on them.

Now, the pads that you really have to avoid on the street are full race pads. They won't work for crap because they require a fair amount of heat and they will ruin a set of rotors in a hurry without that heat in them.

The reason for not using high performance brake pads on stock rotors is simple. The high metallic content of the pads will overheat the stock rotors (too much friction), causing warping and loss of braking power. A friend of my installed Axxis pads on his Integra type-R with stock rotors, when he had to do an emergency stop from 70MPH his rotors were seriously warped. He was out by my house spanking that car on the curvy country roads, you know speed up, hard break from about 60-70 to 25-35, and after about 15 minutes of this he stopped and his calpers were smoking and the paint on them was on fire.

I have Axxis Metal Masters up front, and Auto-Specialty Metal-lux pads on the rear, with Power Slot rotors, and yes the first stop in the morning is a little strange.

So, you actually think that powerslots are better than stock rotors?

Powerslots are worse than stock rotors. They are just stock rotors with material removed, which makes things even worse. I suggest you do some research on braking, try here:

I have first hand experience with SCCA racing, and I do know for a fact that in most cases you must use stock rotors. So you go tell that to the guys running 140 MPH into turn 1 at road atlanta. Tell them that it won't work.

What your friend experienced was the symptoms of a crappy set of brake pads. Metal masters are the worst possible "performance" brake pad out there. Try some porterfields, carbotech, or a similar pad and you will see what I mean.

I have tried Green Stuff to and they REALLY work, there is only one downside and that is the fact that they only run for around 10.000KM! :(
