77 320i engine swap

I inherited a 1982 528e which had been RAMMED in the BACKSIDE but the engine and tranny are still intact. Now I have a 1977 320i M10 4 cylinder and I was curious as to whether or not i could swap out this 82' 6 cylinder into my 320i. I dont know much about BMWs as I've only had mine a few months but I know a few later 320's had the 6 cylinder M20 and the E30's had the same engine in some models as the 528e. Is this swap plausible?
