Fujimi Porsche 917K started

Here's some detail pics of a Fujimi Porsche 917K I'm building OOB (mostly). The kit has gone together well with only the front wheel hubs fitting tightly in the A-arms. Looks like Fujimi started out making this a full detail kit, but then changed its mind and made it curbside as there is a lot of detail that's not seen in the front end.

Cool, those are very nice. I like the 917 and 935 Porsche race cars. What color are you going to paint it? I like the light blue scheme myself.

Great site, that 917archive. Thanks for sharing.
This will be a model of the 1970 LeMans winner (red #23). I'm building it for a customer so he can bring it to the Rennsport Reunion at Daytona in April. I have both of the Fujimi versions and when I get around to building them I'll be adding additional details.

Race car perfection fugly? :screwy: It would appear there is no accounting for taste, or the lack thereof.

Thanks for the progress pics p9o1r1sche (how do you pronounce that? :)) everything looks great thus far. I look forward to seeing this finished as well as any tips you can impart on the building.

Personally I love that kit and I´m just about to start one on my own. I´m just waiting for the Studio 27 Hippie decals to arrive. What do you like more the red version or the gulf - blue version?

Here's more progress pictures.

This is what's covered up by putting the rear bodywork on. One thing for builders - the framework piece that is visible on the top here (the last part to be put on in this step) should be installed so that it remains straight. The tubing structure at the back is pretty flexible and can push this piece up or down. On this one, it is bent down and the pins on the rear bodywork will not fit into the holes in the tabs on the rear of this part.

I would advise filling the huge gap in the spare tire as I have here, as its fairly visible. Nice detail is wasted on the top of the spare.

Those rear inner fender pieces do a lot to straighten and stiffen up everthing at the back.
More pictures later!

Very very nice.

I liked the Le Mans 917k's (especially the Langhecks). This is a good build of one of the most successful of those cars.

Now I'll have to get a Fisher Model Works & Pattern Ferrari 512 "Coda Lunga" so that there's a model of this beast's main rival.

Here's some pics of the decaled body. Decals went on without much problem - provided Microsol is used. First pic shows decal transparency. This is only a problem in the number roundels on the sides and the back, where the white body stripes run under the roundels.

Fantastically clean build. I've been looking at the Fujimi 917 kits for a while, but was afraid they might be poor quality, which is why I'be been holding off buying one.
Well, after seeing this thread it seems my fears were unfounded - I'll have to get me one of these!

Hi Porsche,

Very nice and detail process activity. I'm on this model + Studio 27 pe too.

I'm thinking of opening one door like this :

Do you think it's something possible on this model ?

Tanx for your help.

Certainly, opening the door is possible. You should pay attention to the interior just forward of the doors because the interior sides dont go all the way up to the underside of the body.

In the previous pics, the body hasnt been clear coated due to the opacity issue. I went ahead and double decaled the number roundels and will clear coat today.

I plan to just brush paint the headlight tubs. With the proper thinning of the semi gloss paint and the lens cover over the lights, it will look good.

Gotta go clear coat! More pics to come.

This was a nice build overall. Less complicated than I thought it would be. I guess the biggest drawback is the opacity of the decals. I have double decaled the side number roundels and the one on the tail to fix that problem. One other detail that could be improved is the windshield wipers. They look too clumpy, but if you use the ST27 P/E, you will be replacing the kit wipers. The pieces went together nicely without fitment problems. Didnt find any warped parts and only three or so sink marks at the nose of the body. I'm still puzzled at why some nice details end up covered by the body panels, but I wont lay awake at night thinking about it. I would recommend buying this kit if you like the Porsche 917.

I'd like to built one of these too as the 1970 Daytona winning car of Pedro Rodriguez/Leo Kinnunen (I haven't done any research on that though, so I'm not how straightforward it would be to built this car from Fujimi kit and where to get correct decals).

Stunning, simply stunning!
Since you stole the decals out of another kit could there be another livery variation is in the works?
Are you making a profit out of building for customers, or was it a labour of love? Hope you don't mind me asking.
And we have two more current 917K builds on this forum to look forward to as well :)

Mikko, the Fujimi kit has the extra roof window for the Daytona banking, for regular machines an opaque plastic blanking panel is supplied. Datona cars aslo ran with a spotlight on the lefthand side from memory? Don't know where you'd find decals, the old Union kit had a Daytona variation but the decals weren't the best. You most likely could cobble something together using the Gulf kit sheet and a few spares.

p9o1r1sche
04-14-2004, 09:23 PM
I've got the Union kit and one of the Fujimi Gulf kits. In comparing the decals, if you painted the orange stripe and used ST27 P/E, all you would need to make the Daytona version is the right size #2s and another Firestone decal.

Phil & p9o1r1sche, thanks for the info. Last night I noticed that Fujimi is going to release the Monza 1000km winner of Rodriguez/Kinnunen, that would be the easiest way to do a winning car of these drivers.
