The first gen 3000's or the second, and how come?

The second by far. I'll stick with the differences on the VR4s since those are the ones that I bought.

I'm not a fan of the flip up lights. The molding looks smoother on the second generation. The six speed over the five. The (I know its minor) the added 20hp. The SPYDER

I like the 2nd gen 97-98 look the best.

For 1st gen I like the look of the stealth better.
hum, wonder why I own a 92 RT/TT and a 98 SL ;)

i like the 1st gens look better exept for the pop up lights. i like the side skirts better on the 1st gen then the second. it looks more sharp and ferrari looking imo

youngvr-4...i'm with you on the sideskirts part. But i like 94-98 the best.If your going for performance and looks i like 96-98 cuz you can datalog with thos years...94-95 you cant. But i'm sure you know that.Over all....2nd gen.

yeah 2nd gen, IMHO, for the looks, the 4 bolt main(not all first gens have the 2 bolts, but 91-92 do), the 6spd trannys, improved transfer cases, the extra 20hp (although that can be turned up with a boost controller). And chances are they will have fewer miles. As well as dsm said, 96+ can be datalogged, then again, the 91-93 you can monitor knock. So that could go either way.. But all in all, i think the benefits are on the 2nd gens side.

you can datalog 94-95 years now, software just came out for it, and in fact, its supposed to be the best ECU to datalog now. 99s are probably the best looking, but the 94s are right behind due to the glass headlights just really make a difference over the plastic ones

Where can i find the software for 94-95 datalogging? If you can datalog 94-95s then that would be sweet!

I dunno wat every one goin on about??? I think the 1st generation look WELL SEXY, the flip up lights turn it from a family looking car into a sports car, just my opinion. Also i'm really keen on the vents infront of the front wheels, give it a very angry look about it and the side skirts look well tidy!

I wish I could sort of blend all of the years into my ideal 3KGT. Here are some of the best elements in various years:

91-93 black "ribs" in rear bumper
94 glass headlights
94+ 6 speeds in VR4
96ish 18 in VR4 chrome wheels
94-98 rear center garnish with round backup lamps in body color housing
94-96 front bumper with the nicely divided openings in the sides
99 front bumper huge opening in the center
94+projector lamps with matching fogs
94-96 Infinity sound with 6 disc
91-96 rear spoiler which is signature 3000GT....the latter ones were too much of an Eclipse/Supra knock off and looked cheap on the car while the 99 VR4 was over the top and was bad because there was no active aero offered that year.

If they'd built a 3000GT with all of those elements it would be the best year IMHO.

the best possible would be a first gen with a 99 wing, or a 2nd gen with active aero spoiler and 99 headlights and front bumper. one is smooth and sleek all around and one is exotic and more "in your face" all around. if i had to pick a stock year it would be first gens, they get mistaken for a ferrari all the time :smokin:

youngvr4
03-29-2004, 05:52 PM
your not lying about that, so many people have told me they thought it was a ferrari at first.

Yeah, I agree with you both. The first gens are less rounded than the other gens, and definetly has some of the same characteristics of a Ferarri. The second gens have more of a sleek look to them. They're more rounded because of the new bumpers, headlights, and sideskirts. Definetly both are nice, but I would prefer the first gen just because of my personality. Im out.

No Active Aero on 97vr4? CRUD **TEAR**
Im lookin at gettin one real cheap, but the 1g wing is what makes a 3kgt a 3kgt. To bad the controls arent there so you can put the active wing on, but Ill sacrifice that for a 6 speed. :-)

99 all the way baby!!! i LOVE the headlights...i LOVE the wing....and the lifters!!!!!! gotta respect a 3/s with stock lifters that have no tick. yeah....99 hands down the best looking 3/s. all gen's have there good points (because 3/s cars are the shittttttttttt) but i think the 99 just looks siiiiiiiiick.

Damn this thread's old....but for the record, I like the 2nd generation look. I really like the lip of the 99 because it looks kinda like a body kit but I don't like the bulky lights the 99 has. :)

StealthModifier

The only reason why the newer ones didnt have the lifters tick is because the holes were bigger .. but i bought the newer lifters an they were $14 a piece :eek7:

SOB, some mechanic told me they were like $50 a piece

how many are they?

they are between the cam and the valve. they open the valves

to me i love the 1st gens alot more, mainly becuse of the smigen of black on the sail panel behind the front windows of the 1st gens which to me in some odd way makes it 10x better looking and the more agressive side skirts..overall i just think the 1st gens are more agressive looking with the retactable headlights with the snake eyes that make them look stealthy and tail lights that reflect the shine off a street lights across the whole car as i take a turn as oppose the to the newer bubbly hoods\headlights, side skirt vents, loop spoiler, and overall bubbly look.......but i think its still the sail panels that keep me attacted to 1st gens :) lmao. but as others stated mixed matched year parts can make one badass looking 3kgt. sorry for the rant :)

lol so no wonder there are 24, they are on each valve!

cam and the rocker arm isn't it?

So would basically the 93+ Vr4's be the most mechanically sound? Because I am looking for a first gen, but I heard some gripes about the tranny being not all that durable with the 91 and 92. I know it really is if the car was abused or not and how well it was taken cared off. What do you mean by a change from a 2 bolt to a 4 bolt or whatever? And when you compair the gearing, which car would you say has a better overall gearing set up?

if you take off the oil pan you can see the main bolts, there are 4 sets of 2 on the first gens and 4 sets of 4 on the second gens. this will never cause you any problems unless you are running VERY VERY high hp. the late 92's and 93's have the 25 spline output shaft on the tranny to the xfer case so that is not a problem but i believe the first gen xfer cases are all made of the same lower quality material than the 2nd gens so they are more likely to explode on a hard launch. you do get the obd1 computer though so it is easy to data log but make sure you also check you ecu capacitors because that is a common problem on these cars (is it just first gens that have that problem? i think it is). the 5 speed is also better geared for drags and the first gens are all a lot cheaper. i would say go with a 93 if i had to choose. i would have waited for a good 93 but i found a great 91 that i could not pass up.

as far as the tranny not being as durable, i think the tranny is just as good but they are older so make sure there is no grinding going into any gears or anything like that unless you can get a good deal on it and you do not mind replacing the synchros. i think that is more of an issue of the first gens being older and having more miles than the actual quality of the tranny.

took a corner a bit too fast after i had been drinking and hit a tree. i do not need a lecture on it as i assure you i have learned my lesson and will never drink and drive again but i am not ashamed to admit it now because hopefully it might convince others not to repeat my errors.
