The best hp upgrade would be to swap the engine out for a b-series engine, I am in the middle of swaping a B18a1 (91' Integra LS motor) into mine.

if ur going to retain the stock motor for now, get an higher flowing intake and exhaust system. Don't worry about getting a header if you plan on doing a b series swap sometime in the near future because the header can't be reused on a b series.
the cheapest way to gain HP on ur motor is to swap to MPFI, add a vtec head, and slap in an si tranny.

who says? the b series swap can be the worst to do for some people. like the people who don't have the tools or know how to do the swap. the sohc vtec or zc is much easier for someone just starting OR will cost half as much to be installed. they are really cheaper all the way around. everything costs more for b series, even maintance parts. we have a sohc vtec & b16. i tend to feel sick when buying the b parts knowing how much cheaper the d is.
there is a lot of info on the most common engine swaps into a civic at http://www.4thGenerationCivic.com in the engine section. take a look around and then feel free to ask questions. the majority of us have or had all the different engines.
you know what would probably be a good first upgrade? DPFI to MPFI conversion. link (http://www.4thgenerationcivic.com/how-to's/mpfi_conversion.htm) to info...what, why, and how
then i would probably suggest an intake, exahaust, and a header. like somebody else said.... if you think you might want to get a sohc vtec/zc in the future then the header will fit future engines. if you plan to get a b series of some sort then i would wait to get a header until the b was in. no sense in buying a d series header if you plan to yank it for a b series :icon16:

mpfi conversion is possibly the cheapest, most efficient upgrade. :bigthumb:
