Service Engine Soon and Bad Air Pump?

I have just acquired a 1994 Camaro Z28 about a month ago and have a problem. The service engine soon light comes on and a fan comes on about every 2 minutes. So I have taken it to a mechanic and he checked it out with his computer and it said that a wire might be the wrong gauge and that's why it causes a short and blows my fuse(20) every time I put a new fuse in. This does not affect how the car runs, it runs great. A week later I decided to have the same mechanic do a thorough check over my car and he said he found out that my air pump is bad and needs replaced.

My question is do I need an air pump and if I do not replace it will it ruin other parts on my car? Because the cost of the air pump and installation of it is going to cost over $350....

I am just curious if anyone has had problems relating the air pump and blowing a fuse......

Thank you for your time and patience....I will gladly take any advice that anyone can give.....

just get rid of the air pump and the condenser. who needs A/C when you got power windows and t-tops?!?!

lol, air pump is emissions equipment, not a/c equipment. and yes you need it, youll burn up your cats without it, which will cost even more, chances are if the motor is bad, its got an internal short, and that is whats blowing the fuse. so yeah, i would do the repair. although, its pretty easy to do, you might think about just buyin the part and swaping it in yourself. should be just like a blower motor, three screws, pulls out, put the new one in, three screws down. oh and unplug the old one, plug in the new one, pretty simple.

A.I.R pumps are a pretty common problem on the 93-97 camaros. The problem is that they hold mositure (foam inside) and then the motor rusts and burns out causing a short. Also, there are two different air pumps: California emmisions cars and all others. Make sure you know which one you need. CA emmisions cars have different valves inside. Ebay is sometimes a good place to find AIR pumps.

thanks for the quick replies guys...... I will try to replace the air pump myself then and save a good chunk of money.....I don't believe this car is from CA, but is there any way to know for sure?

You only have to use the CA one if you live in CA, right?

just curious..

All Camaros and Firebirds have a label under the hood that has the emmisions info on it. 93-97 Camaros/ Firebirds look on the radiator support plastic cover (unless you have a T/A or Firehawk which is on the under side of the hood). 98-02 Camaros/ Firebirds have the sticker on the strut tower located on the drivers side... This label should tell you if you have a California emmisions car. If it doesn't say anything about it then you don't have to worry. You don't have to have a special A.I.R pump installed if you live in CA and you have a non-CA emmisions car. I would recommend putting the CA pump on a CA emissions car, because the wiring is different.

All firebirds & camaro's lt1 no matter where they came from have the same air pump and the fuse you blew was the underhood number 7 I believe which is a 20 and yes I had the same problem but after just putting a new fuse in mine hasn't blown again since but if you change the pump you can pick a used one up real cheap and you basically only have to hook up 2 hoses and the harness.
