Interior lights stay on?

I have a new to me 1997 Passat GLX which i bought for cheap and have had good luck fixing up. However after fixing a number of other small items a new problem appeared last night.
The interior lights stay on when all the doors are closed (and the light switch is in the middle), and i need to turn the switch to off.
I am guessing that since the light still works it is not a fuze, and that it is not the door switches or i would get a door ajar light/buzz.
While i have a number of years experience fixing cars i am new to the VW, and don't know where to look next on this one.
Any ideas/advice?
Thanks in advance!

Do you have a door ajar light/buzzer that comes on when each door is opened? Does the alarm set properly? Do the rear reading lights work properly (courtesy & read positions)?

Sorry guys i feel stupid.
After i opened my eyes i found that one of the door switches was broken clean off, therefore appearing to always be open.
I had my local VW dealer order a new one and i should have it Monday.
Thanks for the help. I've got a few more questions to run by you all, hopefully i won't be as blind.
