tailgate cables

GM just recalled some 4 million trucks, including Silverado's for tailgate cables that could corrode and snap. I just replaced mine a month ago for that very reason. The problem cannot be detected by casual observation because the cable is covered by a rubber or plastic sheath.

Check yours carefully to avoid a problem.

Are they the stainless steel cable or still the old style galvanized? If they are not stainless steel, they´ll break again, I thought the parts were not available yet.

they are stainless steal but you have to wait for the dealer to call you because they don't have them in yet. I went to my local dealer because I just bought a house and I'm fixing to move and didn't want the tailgate to break. GM said if the cables do snap that they would pay for any damages that occure due to the incident.

OK, look at the cables where they are crimped the the end fitting, they should not have epoxy filling the end of the strands. FYI

Both my cables broke Saturday and I got the recall notice today (Monday). It says the replacements are stainless.

Mine broke a year ago, they had black coating and crimped connectors. I made my own with aircraft cable 1 size larger, but you need a crimper that can apply 90,000 pounds of force. I hav Burdy MD-8 crimpers which are about $900 used. so this may not be an option for you. Just thought I would give my 2 cents, because i'm bored.

I work for the county, but i'm also a C-10 (electrical contractor) I aquired alot of speacilty tools over the years, I was making my own cables because I wanted to try those crimpers that have been collecting dust for years in my garage.I think I got them when I bought out a retire C-10's whole inventory.
