97 Grand Am SE electrical? problem

Today when driving my battery light (then later the anti theft) came on so i immediately looked it up in the manual. It said it could be an electrical problem and to turn everything (radio, heat) off and get it checked out asap so I turned everything off and kept driving (needed to get to school).
***About 30 minutes later my car started to ?stall out? Lights in the dash were flashing, the thermostat and accelaration pins started going crazy and it was making loud noises.
***So, I pulled my car over and it eventually shut off by itself. I was able to drive it for about 2 minute intervals before the steering wheel locked up and engine shut down (I only did it twice tho).
***When I called the dealership they said to bring it in and have an electrical diagnosis done then they would tell me what was wrong. Unfortuanatly, I dont have the money to get this checked out and was just wondering if anyone knows of this problems (or has any ideas as to whats wrong).

***Any help at all would be greatly appreciated since I've already put alot of money into this car. Stephanie

First guess might be accesory belt, whens the last time it was changed? Could also be alternator or belt tensoner
