Rack and Pinion Assy

My 2000 New Beetle w/the gas 2.0 began losing power steering fluid. I took it to a local garage and was told the rack and pinion assy was bad. This is only available from the dealer to the tune of $711.00! Has anyone else had this problem? My Haynes manual doesn't show this part. Does anyone have a breakdown showing this part or know of a better manual? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
