hmm
bigass, wide valve covers = DOHC
little black ones = SOHC
some have a plastic intake which can crack
if it's running, just listen for the usual crap (piston slap, knocking, pinging, etc). look at the tailpipe and look at/smell the fumes, see how it's running (rich/lean)
my knowlege of modulars isnt' that great, but that's the basics.

The 4.6 doesnt really have many problems. T-birds i believe have the SOHC engine. They can take alot :)

Take it to Autozone and have them scan it for codes - they do it for free. While driving there, listen carefully. Check the oil - see if it's been maintained. Check the coolant and see if it's clean and radiator not clogged. Make sure the A/C works. Basics.
Good luck.

I own a 95 T-bird with a 4.6 and yes it is a single over head cam. It is a strong motor and it can take a lot of crap. And it doesn't have a lot of issues. actually very few issues. You will like it very much.
