Ran into a total sleeper: Audi Wagon turbo

I was driving back from work, trying to show a new employee an alternative path back home besides the 101 freeway (Which sucks as far as traffic is concerned in the morning time). Anyways, I see a dark colored Audi in my rear view mirror (He cut off my buddy). The lane to the right of me clears, and this car just flat out books into that lane. It seemed like I saw a tad bit rich exhaust. Anyways, I stop at a redlight, and I see the owner look at me. He said, "So how do you like that car?". I told him i liked it and it was plenty quick. I asked if his was an S4/S6 wagon (I'm not too familiar with the Audi Monikers, but it clearly had what appeared to be an S on the back of it). He told me the car was a 96/97. The guy was in his 40's and clearly into cars (He had a shift light gauge). He told me he dynoed 417 awhp  He basically had a chip, bigger turbo(s), and a few other odds and ends. i thought he said T28 turbos, but i could be mistaken. I told him I was gonna pass up on racing him (De Soto is swarming with cops in the morning, plus he'd smoke me, and i'd lose track of my buddy). He hasn't taken it to the track, but he Gteched it at 12.9 sec. He said later, and his tires actually chirped (All 4 of them), and the car was gone. Total sleeper. I'm sure alot of people are caught off guard by a grandma style Audi wagon trouncing their sport cars.

Wow 417 AWDhp! He must be making what 500 at the flywheel?

I heard that the old S4's (The one before the new V8's), could be chipped to bring their 250 hp to over 300. 417 seems extremely feasible with a larger turbo(s) and a chip. Besides that car was actually moving at times when he got on it, and the tires were chirping. My EVO couldn't chirp it's tires at 20-30 mph upon accelerating. Hopefully i'll see him again, so that maybe I can try to convince him to go to Speedway. Maybe I could take a vid of him running out there. Well that and setup a few races between him and some unexpecting vette owners :)

Rs4?

Never underestimate a turbo Audi, even the older 10V 5 cylinders. Audi gets all of their turbo knowhow directly from Porsche engineers. In fact, the RS4 was tuned by factory Porsche engineers.

The 2.2 liter 20 valve 5 cylinders are very impressive motors. Stock, they make around 230hp, and 260lbft@1950rpm. With turbo upgrades, some fuel system upgrades and 3" exhaust, 500hp is pretty easy to get.

I'm not too well versed on the last generation V6, but it's pretty impressive as well. Stock, the engine only made 250hp, although it was underrated at that. Modified I have seen them well over 600hp at the flywheel. The V6 made it's peak torque of 258lbft at 1850rpm.

Here's a good link if you're interested in the cars. Eventually, everyone needs a family car you can throw the kids in the back of, take a bunch of camping gear or suit cases, and head off for a vacation.

the RS4 is not very uncommon here in germany.

theres one driving around in my hometown. They're mostly owned by older family-dads :)

but just look at the specs... and yes, they're sold here with these specs, you don't have to modify them (long link)

Just wow. looks like an average audi wagon, with 430 hp. Is able to reach 200 mphs / 320 kphs.
And this car in my hometown just looks like this. It's very silent and elegant, you'd never know it takes 4.4 sec 0-60.

Maybe like one of these?

I'm going to get an S4 wagon if I can ever find one up here... Either that or I'll just spring for an Audi Allroad, it's an A6 wagon with a lift, serious AWD equipment and the 2.7 turbo engine from the last S4. Again, 258lbft@1850rpm. A little turbo upgrade, that'll come in around 2300rpm, but be good for 400hp!

Yep that's it. It was square. No real rounded edges. I believe it was a 90'ish car from what he said.
