Transmission vs tire size

i bought a 1999 firebird v6 at auction that had 17 inch aftermarket rims and 235/40 17 tires on it and shortly after the tranny went out ,the car has 69,000 miles on it and the dealership said the different tire/wheel size from stock caused the computer to make the tranny go out .They told me i needed the same tire/wheel ratio as stock or the new tranny would go out and not be warranteed .Does anyone know if this is in fact why the tranny went out and if the computer can be reprogrammed to accept different wheel/tire ratios?
