I know new bulbs will have to be soldered but how to remove front of the radio. I have released the clips around the face, but something in the center seams to be holding it on, DON'T WANT TO BREAK IT.

Veeeery Carefully.

I've done this on Sony's before, just look for screws, or snaps that hold the face on.

I am assuming you already have the bulbs on hand and just need to know how to remove and install them. My suggestion is to replace them all at once to save from doing so in the future.

You can remove the face plate of your stereo by using a flat head screwdriver. slide it under the 4 locking tabs and gently pull out repeat for all 4 tabs.

Use a sharpie marker to mark all screw locations with a little dot. lay face down, remove screws.

Circuit board should just pop right off from trim.

Mark and desolder bulbs, install new ones and thats it.

While you have it apart its not a bad idea to spray your cd mechanism out with air .. just slide your screwdriver under the top metal cover by the 3 tabs, and pop it up and remove top cover, spray with air and reassemble.

oh i forgot to mention that the Volume and tune knobs need to be pulled off before disassembly, fad, bal, bass, tre, should be fine on there. To make things a bit easier you can remove the bottom cover, looks towards the front to unhook the connectors for the face plate...

Ok. So I have a couple of questions as my CD Unit has done the same thing.
Question 1 is how do you get to the stereo on 99' Silverado? Do you just pry the plastic around the unit and it pops off? or are there screws involved. Couldn't find anything on the net on how to get to the Stereo.

Question 2
Where did you get the bulbs for the stereo? Electronics Store, Radio shack, Dealer????

I'm not so sure your bulbs are bad. I have the same problem in my factory stereo (only right half not lit) and my ac control panel (only right side not lit also). I had both units out and did a continuity check while the bulbs are still in the circuit and they checked out ok; they are bulbs, not LED's by the way. I will try and troubleshoot these units and get back with you when I get more info.

Chuck16, yes the plastic around the head unit just pops off.

You pop the dash trim around the outside edges off, and then remove it. There are 2 tabe on each side of the radio you have to squeeze w/your fingers and pull to get it to come out.

What did you find in trouble shooting? My '02 exhibits the same symptoms, 2 radio lights out and the fan control light out. Also, where do I get replacemnt bulbs?

Also, does this apply to the A/C control lights? The lights behing the 3 buttons on the bottom of the control seem to be blown.

I finally got a chance to pull out my stereo and AC control unit again. I was wrong to say the bulbs may not be the problem. I removed one of the non-working bulbs out of the circuit and it is a blown bulb. I guess I was getting continuity across the bulb by a resistor parallel with the bulb. The bulbs are hard to identify, but I am taking them to work with me tomorrow to look at the numbers located at the base of the bulb under a magnefying glass. I'll let you know what thay are and were to get them soon.

I finally replaced those blown bulbs in my stock head unit and ac controller. I couldn't find a cross-reference for the original bulbs so I went to radio shack and bought the 12 Volt, I think they were 60mA incandescent bulbs. They work fine.

Bobbido, Did the buttons that allow you to turn your A/C on and off and the recirc/Fresh air buttons have lights in them as well?

There are three bulbs on that unit. They are placed between the selector switches. As for the buttons, I'm sure there are individual bulbs in each button. Hope that helps.
