Transmission Question

Okay, here's the deal, I haven't found an eclipse yet. I'll be getting a '97-'99 Spyder GS-T when I find one that I like. I plan on doing a drivetrain swap with a GSX. I know this can be done, and know that it will take some fabrication. What I want to know is weather or not a W6MG1 transmission out of a 3000GT will be able to be put in the car, or if there is a 6 speed transmission that will work. If not, a 5 speed will have to be sufficient, but that extra gear would be really nice.

I dont think anyone here will be able to answer that question. Aside from that, the extra gear is nice for economy, but it doesnt make the car any faster. If you want more top end you can get one of two top end gears for the DSM trannies, or go with a MAgnus Dogbox which has taller ratios on all 5 gears and is nearly idestructable. 4000 bucks, but it wont be cheap trying to adapt a tranny from the wrong car anyway. Just an idea.

If I was going to do this I would be trying to get the guys at roadrace to spill the beans, theyve done a couple of these conversions. If you snoop around their site you may be able to find some info, I know I've read about it somewhere.

Thanks for the tips. After snooping around a bit in the dsmtuners forum, I've found that the tranny swap can be done, but that the particular tranny tends to eat up output shafts, and the amount of power I'm going to have to make in order to have an enjoyable drive in a car that is going to weigh as much as a spyder with the full GSX drivetrain is going to be more than the tranny would likely handle. The Magnus Dogbox sounds like a more viable approach, though the truth of it is, that I really don't care to top 110-120 mph... I'm in california and paying 2.25 a gallon for fuel, and I just want taller gears for the economy of things (that was the intent behind the 6 speed, a second OD gear to get the revs down on the open road, while still having a wide enough ratio tranny for an engine with a decent powerband) I'll have to look into this a lot more before making a final decision, but at least I've got a couple options now. Thanks.
