But if you see it in person , it is perfectly smooth .
i don't think is posible sanding it down , and leave it with some perfectly edge .

Call the US Mint...they keep track of both minting errors (if this is a bungled coin, it's worth a fortune) and counterfeits or alterations.

You could also call a coin dealer that you trust. You'll get the same info, only quicker than the mint. I did this when I noticed a quarter that sounded different from other quarters when I dropped it. It turned out it was just a regular silver quarter, but I learned how to find out about such things.

Sorry! I didn't mean to get your hopes up. Every time I've called a coin collector to ask about a weird coin, I've been disappointed. I just wanted you to get helpful info quickly. The coin dealers I've dealt with have been very straightforward, because the coins I've asked about did not interest them at all.

I would show it to a few dealers, or call them. If someone in your area is doctoring coins, the local coin dealers might already know about it.

Why not? part of the F/A-18 canopies cleaning equipment is sand-paper. A lot easier to smooth out metal than an aircraft canopy you look through.

Best I can tell from googling, if its fake its worthless (well as worthless as a penny is) and if its not then its worth $20 or so. Certainly not a fortune.

^ you'd be surprised. I remember one of my friend's pepsi or coke can had an error, one part was printed upside down or something. was worth over $10k!!!!

i used to collect coins. i do recall a penny made in 1909 being sought after. i believe it was a "1909 S vdb". there were only 700k or so made-sounds like a lot were made. i believe the average printing for a penny is nearing 2 billion a year.

With all collectables, its the rarity and how much a collector wants it. You may have the rarest object in the world, but if nobody sees any value in it you'll get bubkus. That penny looks like its been ground smooth. It doesn't look like a misprint. As far as I can tell unless there is an error (like both sides having the same bottom/top or mispelling) its not going to be worth a whole lot. I hope I'm wrong. I'd be happy if it were worth a ton of money, but don't get your hopes to high.

If u look at the heads side of that coin...it looks brand new, the image of lincoln is perfectly outlined and not worn out at all. now check the year...1977? i dont think so. its fake. the tails side does look like someone took a little rotary sander to it.

My dad still has an unopened, factory sealed bottle of Coca-Cola (one of the old glass bottles) that he got from a vending machine when he was in college. Why? It's full of orange pop :D

I am a coin collector and do some small dealing. Without actually being able to see it I can't say. It looks like a die variety which probably doesn't mean much to you. The rim on the obverse (front) is off center. It would be pretty hard to sand it that smooth or with a circle like that. If you have a local coin dealer have him look at it. Or else you can send it to ANA, American Numismatics Association. The are the governing board more or less for coin collecting.

I used to have a 1909 S-VDB!! I sold it years ago.. sold my whole collection like an idiot.

I can't see how a die would strike a coin like that. BUT.. it would still have copper on the outside if the die struck it that way. as is, it looks like it does??? if it were sanded down you would see the cupro-metal base metal that is under the copper. I can't see that (it would be silver in color) so this is kinda wierd.. hmm..

heh heh... just my :2cents:

i was just about to say that, there are poepl who will buy anything if you make it sound valuable...just put the reserve at like 10 or 15 bucks or however much you want, then if you dont sell it of well, and if you do, great!

But its cool, i might hang on to it if i were you...but of course, im not, so do whatever the hell you want with it.
