Hey, how it going people of AF land. I'm in the process of purchasing a 1989 240SX for $400.00 (got to love having friends in small places). I'm having a little delima. As the name says, the car has an auto. I've come to two different pathes to go and I guess im just looking for a little insight. If this has been discussed already, sorry for not using the search button. One word/one dash:dial-up, it's hell. Anyway, I was thinking about either Plan A:getting a conversion to mate with an SR20 red-top or Plan B:getting parts that can be put on another 240 with a manual already. Parts like the basic rims, suspension, etc...(even though that doesnt leave much). It simply comes down to this, is getting it converted worth it or should I just wait and do Plan B?
P.S.Before I spark hell on me for having an automatic, believe me i'm suffering, but hey right now it serves its basic purpose. Point A. to point B. driving (Which also, is killing me :banghead: )

Don't worry I to feel your pain...I have a 92 Nissan 240sx AUTOMATIC the word just sends shreiks down my spine...just kidding but it still makes me twitch.
Anyway well I have no choice but to wait it out tell after high school to but a SR20det engine...my parents won't let me swap.
You are lucky however so you can go straight to the swap instead of working on handling and weight reduction parts.
The AUTO to MANUAL well cost you...
$3,500 for the engine, transmission and installation
$1,500 for converting it to a manual
I say go with the swap and go to point A. Besides it is your first car.

Hmm...400 dollars? pretty good deal man if there's nothin really wrong with it besides bein automatic. if i were you, i'd just search for a manual car for at least 1000 more, cuz you're def gonna pay that much for an auto-manual conversion. so go with your plan b.

I gotta agree and say that the auto-manual conversion is just not worth it...
I know a guy that converted his Prelude from an auto-SI (non-vtec) to an H22 manual and he hasn't had anything but problems, and he had his work done at a reputable shop here in San Diego... too bad he doesn't drive a real car...
Anyways, yes you're looking at a pretty high priced conversion... and besides if its just your beater car, maybe a good option might be to pick up another 240 altogether (one is never enough!)

swap andgines and the tranny at the same time
most places will only charge an extra 300 in addition to the engine swap cost to convert your auto to manual
not 1.5k

The only real thing wrong with the car is the front end damage. I was thinking about swapping the front with a S13 Silvia, but as with the popularity of the Civic :disappoin , that conversion is a little to wide spread for me. If I could find a 180SX front clip for a good price then that would solve that front end issue (I like flip-ups & the Pivot kit  ). Anyway, so Plan A. sounds pretty good because that conversion I hear is a waste of time. Unless you have that kind of cash laying around. Does anyone know of a good place that does good work as far as swapping motors around Orlando? If all else fails i'll just have NRGperformance in Tallahassee, Fl do the work. I know they do excellent work from their 545whp stock bottomed SR20 powered RX-7. That alone is enough to get my blood flowing :iceslolan But, the thought of leaving my car out of my 30 min. range doesn't tickle my fancy(couldnt think of anything else)

Ya know, the sad part about that is the fact that I didnt even think about the many front ends that are discarded for Silvia ones :disappoin The gears up stairs need somemore lube. I've got to much stuff going on. I'm curious, I have a goal of 350whp, its small for a reason (drifting). Thats more towards the end of the project, but anyway. With 350whp on an HKS GT2535 BB turbocharger, would that put me around low 13s in the 1/4 mile? Not like it really matters, but i'm just curious.

The conversion with swap is nothing more than pretty much drilling two holes + stamping out a third and then swaping the parts in....not $1,500 unless you are getting raped or the shop has enough reputation to ask for that amount. For $3500 you should be able to find a complete R&R SR20DET conversion with auto->manual included.
To just go auto->manual can be done DIY for less than $200 + the price of a new clutch sometimes.

im thinking of buying a 1996 honda prelude and it has no motor or transmission and i was going to put a h22 motor in it. it doesnt say if it was a manual or atts. so if it was atts how much would it cost to convert atts manual whan i have the engine and the 5sp tranny.

I swear to god some people have no fucking common sense these days. Where the hell do you get off thinking that you would post this in the 240sx forum when you mentioned absolutely nothing about a 240sx. Why not post it in the Prelude forum? Or hell, any other honda forum..
