I live on a kind of busy street in rochester and at least every 8 minutes i here an import or domestic drive by with a stupid muffler on it that makes it sound like a go cart/lawnmower/weedwhacker. Im not an import hater but come on, someone plz tell me why they like to make their car sound like that or is it for the "performance". I have never heard a muffler i liked the sound of, a guy i used to work with had an HKS muffler on his 97 prelude and it sounded like garbage. I just think it is annoying. But plz some of you guys with mufflers tell me why you put it on there. Im not trying to start anything on this thread i would just like to know why you put on those mufflers.

4 bangers, by nature make an annoying buzzing sound, my car having it as well. Some of them sound better then others (Most notably the SRT-4). I have to admit that Ford really knows what they are doing with the Mustang, cause no car (Not even ferrari) has as nice an exhaust note as the stangs do.

That is very true. I used to own a mustang 1991 GT with all the bolt ons but unfortunately i wrecked it. I love the note of any v8 but the sound of the 4 banger mufller absolutely drives me nuts.

Mustang 4.6 best exhaust note ever. Nobody can touch it. I know a guy with an SRT-4 and he has exhaust on his and it sounds nothing like what most 4 bangers sound like, its got a kinda exotic sound to it but thats the only 4 banger that I have ever heard that doesn't make that buzzing sound.

I read somewhere that the Neon SRT-4 actually doesn't have a muffler.

I saw on TV in Car and Driver that the stock SRT-4 does not have mufflers. that they said was one of the draw backs because of all that damn humming.

My EVO's stock exhaust sound stinks. I hope the Megan catback exhaust system cures this dilemma. One thing I do love though, is the humming noise I hear when I start to acclerate (Maybe it's the turbo, I dunno).

i'm more a fan of the sound from a v12 than anything... though as far as v8's go, a corvette's exhaust sounds just as nice as a mustang's... (unless of course, engine noise is in there too... really agressive cams in a mustang sound amazing)

I love the sound of the 3S-GTE engine on an exhaust...

Hmm lotsa nice choices here but gonna say my favorite goes to a Pagina Zonda for being the most unique sound exhaust ever. Either that or a Mclaren f1.

The MOST amazing sound is that Lotus car. Esprit? i think. Anyway one came into my work and its a Twin-Turbocharged V-8. You hear the deep rumble of the V-8, which sounded better than the 4.6 mustangs. Then you hear the turbo spool, then the blow off valve when he changed gears. OMG!!!!

that whining sound you hear at low speeds is from the awd transfer case. yeah its pretty noisy but it sounds damn cool. and then once you get high up you here a whistling sound, and that would be the turbo.

not too sure how clear the starter of this thread is on the definition of 'mufflers'. it's a very generic term.
on one hand, we have resonators, also known as 'fart cans' that make the distinctive buzzing noise he refers to. on the other, there are large-diameter mufflers that flow much more freely and have a deepening effect on the exhaust sound. that sound depends on the number and configuration of chambers. and, there are straight-throughs (my personal favorite) that are little more than straight pipe with holes in it, with sound-absorbing (or altering) chambers around it.
certain mufflers in conjunction with different pipe configurations (H, X, Y) make distinctive sounds which are all useful in making your car sound unique.
this post is directed at newbs who don't know exhuast, so no stating-the-obvious comments please :smokin:

On the subject of good sounding cars has anyone here ever heard the sound of a big block mopar, especially the 426 hemi? It seems as if no one has exposure to these kind of machines anymore, the sound really makes your blood boil. A deep and throaty roar and the real lopey idle is what it is all about.

I love the sound of boosted rotary with an exhaust and turboback. Or a non boosted rotary with dual pipes. High pitched, yes, but not like in i4..
