Dyno Tuning???

What are your opinions on dyno tuning? I have a 65 Mustang straight six, that has not been tuned in probably over a year. I have added a pertronix ignition kit, but have not been able to smooth out the engine. I would get it to run smooth for about a week and then it would start to idle rough and ping without me changing anything.

sounds like your timing is off to me. get a timing light and make sure it's within spec. dyno tuning is expensive and usually only for hardcore performance guys.

I might be dumb, but I tried to use a timing light last night and I couldn't get the light to flash! I hooked it up according to the manual ( which seemed wrong, but there was a specific change in the book) red lead to ground and black to neg batt cable. No light flash! I also tried to hook up a dwell/tach and it said the car was running at 1000 rpm, which I am sure it was not. I used a brand from Sears, not the Craftsman. Any recommendations??? For the dwell/tach I connected the green lead to the neg post on the pertronix coil and the black to ground. The instuctions were a little unclear. I agree that it is the timing, but I am also a little wary of the carb and I am not sure what to look at to check its tuning.

Thanks

for the timing light:
red lead to pos
black lead to neg
claw goes aroung the number one spark plug wire

If that doesnt work, the lights busted

totally agree with him... i dunno who told you to hook up a timing light like you did, but don't listen to them anymore =P

Im not sure if you did this or if you know to, but here goes. 1st take out the #1 spark plug and disable the ignition. 2nd get a fired to help you, cover the spark plug hole with your thumb, then have someone bump the ignition over until it blows your thumb off the hole (exhaust stroke). 3rd mark the damper at the timing grid/needle/scale whatever you have or make a mark on the block so that you can see where they line up. 4th put the spark plug back in, put the wire on, and re-connect the ignition. Start the car, let it come up to operating temp, and see where your timing is. Good luck.
