K&N FIPK filter question

hi,

just got this filter yesterday for my 97 gst, will be installing it this weekend. question about the way it's built. the top of the filter is stuffed, with a crome-like cap. on the stock unti, there's a ram-air like tube that goes into the left side of the airbox. with the new filter, this air tube will be hitting the crome cap directly... does this matter? is this a bad design? or will the air still go around the cap and into the filter?

like to hear what you guys think.

thanks.

I dunno if it just me, but I dont understand that description. A pic would help.

The FIPK is a good design. As far as I am aware.

Ok, i'll try to do better this time... :)

Looking under the hood from the front of the car, the air intake box is bottom left hand corner of a 2G turbo charged engine.

On the left side of the stock intake box is a small round hole, it is connected to a channel that's routed through the fender to the bottom of the car where it can pickup air i guess.

Then the air rushes thorugh the airbox, get filtered, then out through the right side of the airbox, where the box is mainly connected to (don't know the right word for this, but the MAS is around there)...

I'm simply asking about the K&N FIPK filter design, where after installation, looking down from the top again, the cone is tapering to the left side. But the left side is stuffed... so the hole that's on the left side of the fender cannot push air into the filter directly. I'm sure it will get a lot of air, but I'm just asking if any of you are concerned that there's no opening in the top of the K&N filter to let air in.

Also, have any of you designed a boot to enclose the filter so the engine's hot air don't get in? And is that even a big deal?

When does the air go into the intercooler? After it passes the filter right?

Thanks again, hope this is more clear.

i know what your talking about, yes you can take that piece of plastic tube out, it dosnt really matter. mine was doing the same thing, and i took it out, im about to cut it down a few inches to clear the filter and see if it helps. BUt in conclusion you dnt need the piece of plastic.

thanks 95ClipseGS-T. i was pretty sure it doesn't need that piece. but what i was really wondering is whether adding some kind of ducting directly to the filter would help. also, does the engine generate too much heat with the filter so close to it? does it need some kind of separator to block off the hot air?

I left the tube there, but the top of my filter isn't closed, it's an inward cone into the filter. There are plenty of people with it there, and lots without. You will still get plenty of air to the filter.

I've seen some home-made heat blocking seperator, so if you'd like to try it, good luck.

JoeWagon, do you have some pics of your home-made heat blocking separator? do you think it adds anything?

Also, do you know, or has anyone cut a hole in the top of their closed filter?

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear... I didn't take the time to make one, but I've seen it, and you can probably find pics on www.dsmtuners.com

You wouldn't want to cut a hole in your filter.. air would just pass up the filter and you'd get debris in your engine.
