stalling 97 golf GTI

I'm having a problem with my 97 Golf GTI VR6. Every time I start it, it stalls immediately unless I give it gas. As soon as I back off the accelerator, the RPMs drop and the engine dies. The check engine light also comes on. Car ran perfectly up to this point; there were no signs of a developing problem. Before I take it in for a diagnostic test, I'd like to see if any of you might know what the problem could be. Thanks.

There's too many possibilities to list, do a search on VR6 stalling & you will see all the possibilities. The easiest & quickest thing to do is have the codes read to point you in the right direction.

Just FYI, the throttle body needs replaced. That was the cause of the stalling.

yea my guess would be sometin in the intake system or the MAF sensor
