2001 Jetta rear brakes

This is my first thread ever. During a routine oil change my VW dealer informed me that my rear brake pads were at 25% while my front were at 80%.... Hmmmm my first flag as my car only has 22k. Trying to save $150.00 my x father in law offered to change them for me. It is 4wheel ABS disc brakes. The rear calapers have an intergrated E brake. After taking the old shoe pads off he noticed a latch of sorts and it seemed to be extending the piston outward. The piston will not depress again. We have tried turning clockwise as you press... even using a C clamp to press as we turned. He even tried to release possible pressure by taking off the little 8mm nipple for the fluid line. Nothing has been working. I am concerned that this could be part of the reason as to why my rear pads have worn prematurely. We are at a loss :( I am going on Vacation in 3 days if anyone can respond ASAP it would be greatly appreciated :)

I've been seeing alot of complaints about short-lived rear pads, especially on Passats. Dealer says it's normal. Getting the piston in can be a real pain, that's why they make special tools for it. I've had trouble even using a nice quality tool. The little cube type that connects to a socket extension is the cheapest, but will probably not work. You need the type that has a force screw and hooks under the other side of the caliper for pressure while you turn the piston. Good ones are expensive, but they wouldn't be selling if people could get around it. Using C-clamps & pliers, etc... just won't work on some cars.

Wow.. thank you. I think VW should have made a recall on there braking system for this year in particular. I know there was one on the ABS and my car had it done just before I purchased it. Unfortunately I did just go and buy the tiny cube rear disc adjuster tool today :( Perhaps I can take it pack and get the good one. I called VW today and they did discribe the heavier duty tool to me on the phone now that I think about it. I will use the smaller one then go get the good one and let you know what happens.. My x father in law will be home soon. ;)
