I have a 1995 cutlass suprem that will just cut off while driving. It will start back up with no problem I can drive it for a while and it will cut back off. I've had a new fuel line filter put on. I had the dealership to look at the car they place a new brain/computer in the car and told me that they could not locate the problem.

If anyone has encountered this problem any info that you share will be greatly appreciated.

I also have a '95 Cutlass Ciera which I bought in Aug. '02. It was fine til Apr. '03. Then it developed a BAD case of the stalls. It has now stalled way over 200 times.

I can just FEEL it go, so I pull over as quickly as I can and shut it off before losing the steering and brakes. All I have to do is cuss (or count) to about 30, then turn it back on and drive off. It might be 3 or 4 weeks before it stalls again, or it might do it 6 or 7 times during the same driving trip.

The first place I took mine said he had seen a similar problem, but the lady wanted her computer replaced...it didn't fix the problem. The second place I took mine had not seen the problem before. Neither place could find anything when they used the diagnostics machine.

My new manager just told me last week that the car he bought for his daughter is doing the same thing.

I'm hoping someone will answer you with a solution...SOON.

My 92 cutlass did the same thing, but wouldn' t start immediately after quitting. It would about thirty minutes later. I replaced the fuel filter thinking that would solve the problem. Later, it did the same thing, so I replaced the fule pump. Now it won't start at all. The spark plugs are getting no spark at all. When it rains it pours.

It may be worth checking the ignition coil module and the contacts for the wire. Try to borrow one from a pal and change it for a day or so

Hi All,

I have an 89 cutlass that had a simalar problems that cost me much more than it should have to repair.

Here were what mine was doing

cutoff while driving (engine quits)
poor idle
no start

All tracing of the trouble first pointed towards the fuel pump which was repaced. This did not fix the problem. We then traced the fuel pump relay wiring back to main computer where there was not 12v pulse to turn on fuel pump.

What the problem turned out to be was the OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT, the computer will shut off the fuel pump if it thinks that the car has no oil pressure from a defective sending unit. This will not give you any engine codes.

Try changing the sending unit its to the right of the oil filter under the engine, you will need a special socket for the unit that you should be able to rent.

Hope this helps
Steve

My '94 Ciera "S" had similar problems, due to two different failures:
- The transmission torque converter lock-out became corroded, dirty, or weak and sometimes failed to release the converter when the car slowed from highway speeds. When it needed to downshift, it just stalled instead. I disconnected the lockout solenoid, which may reduce cross-country mileage, but corrects the problem. I may get industrious enough to replace it eventually.
- The idle air control valve was dirty. The engine would just abruptly stall, usually at idle. These were expensive, so I cleaned up the old one. This corrected the problem.

ive got kinda the same problem, my 86 cutlass will run for about an hour and stall, it wont start for about 30 min and then starts right up. i think it might be the fuel filter but i cant find it anywhere. any help will be apreciated.

I had a problem like this b4 when i first got my cutty it is a 96 supreme.I replaced the fuel pump and the filter did not help ok maybe alittle. It turned out to be a bad cable at the jumper post on the engine.Replaced all my cabled pos & neg and the jumper post cable and has not stalled yet in about 6 months.

ive also heard about these cars being built with faulty fuel injectors, if nothing else is wrong replace your injectors with ones for a 1996 and this will fix it
