ATR and borla are popular brands for our cars. If you want a decent tone, get a catback system at the bare minimum, not just mufflers. Also, you could use a stock vr4 exhaust taht would be an improvment. Check out www.3sxperformance.com under exhaust to see some options. Also, a hiflow cat/testpipe and downpipe would add hp and get your car loud enough to be noticed a half mile away.

nightrider, do you have a vr4 or sl or base. I'd check out ATR and Borla at 3sxperformance.com, both would pass emissions. The only way that you would fail emissions is if you remove your cat or gut your precats. A catback system wont really do much to effect emissions. Even a hiflow cat is supposed to still pass. Do you live in Cali? Because there they are a bit stricter, but otherwise...you should be fine with a catback and hi-flow cat. Autozone and pepboys also sell a bottle of some sort that helps you pass emissions if you use it right before...I don't know the details of using it, but I have seen it. Ironically it actually has a picture of a 3000gt on it.
Personally, my plans for my vr4 are to get an ATR downpipe, gut precats and get an ATR highflow cat and catback. But the ATR downpipe when you first get it, eliminates the space for the main cat. So I will run it without a cat until emissions, then I will saw it down and put on the highflow cat. However, the stock vr4 catback is good enough hp-wise, and is not very restrictive comapiritively speaking. So if you have a vr4, I would only get the catback as one of your first mods if you want that loud deeptone sound that attracts the attention. If you have a base or SL, its a different story. Either way, if your goals are more power over more sound, I would go with an aftermarket downpipe before I upgraded the catback. The stock downpipe is quite restrictive. Upgrading it will be a great way to freeing up some hp, and it will make your car a bit louder, while still appearing stock...to the officer following you...

thanks

I wish i had a Vr-4 but said to say its an 96 Sl. I just put some 18'' BBS on my ride and they are really heavy. i need to get more hp. I feel like im driving a civic now! lol. but seriously i wasthink about getting a VR-4 down pipe since your pipe is 3'' and mine is 2.5''. my only concern was that will the 3'' fit on the SL. I dont want to get it and then i have to spend countless days trying to make it work. also if i geta cat and catback exaust wouldn't i have to take the catalyic converter off. I heard you need that to pass inpections.

No, catback is what the name says, "from the cat back". It's just the piping that goes from the cat to the back of your car/mufflers. 2ndly, you can always switch a hi-flow cat "2.5 inch i think" for your normal cat. It will still pass emssions, unless you live in Cali...there I am not sure about anything, I just know they are strickter, but I don't know how strict.

I don't know about the vr4 downpipe fitting or not on an SL, although, remember your car isn't turboed, so you want to keep some backpressure to help your lowend torque. So I would go with the one made for your car.

I recently bought a 93' sl model and now after its all paid for i've noticed the exhaust has a sputtering noise to it. since i live in cali, the exhaust laws are a lot stricter and i can't get away with quite as much as most of you. but i'm wondering if anyone out there knows what a good exhuast system is to upgrade to without failing emmisions. right now, i'm looking at the ATR and Borla lines, but if i replace one thing on the exhuast, i'm doing it all.....downpipe, cat, muffler........EVERYTHING.

Well, that will cost you over a grand. Anywhere else, I would say that it would be fine, but I'm not sure about Cali. Perhaps call ATR or Borla and check with them if it will pass CALI emissions tests. You definantly wont pass if you replace the cat with a testpipe, but if you use a highflow cat, your chances will be better.
