I just purchased a 1997 Villager. With a 1/4 of a tank, I hear a noise in the back I assume is the fuel pump. It seems rather loud. Is this normal?

Does it sounds like a high pitch sound?....and can you hear the same sound with the key in the ignition but set to the on position? Yeah, this is typical noise, get used to it.....

I have a 97 with 128k and the pump noise is similar to what you describe.

Almost a humming sound and very annoying when parked in traffice or idling.

My mechanic said it couls be the sending unit but ford/mercury tend to be loud.
I;m at the point of having a constant humming in my ear.
Maybe i'll use the humming noise as backdrop to meditate

Mine is louder than I am used to with other cars as well. I seem to have a start / run / die when I first crank in the morning. and a erratic timing mark. I may look at a fuel pressure check. . It cranks/ starts/ runs to 1500 for a second, then drops, and then dies.. then when I start it again, it starts same way, then idles at 600 rpm. and is fine. Although it seems slow from 40-80 mph...

yeah, if i were you id check your fuel pressure. also you will have a erratic timming if you dont unhook your spark advance first before checking your timming. older models are vacuum operated.

Check your IAC valve which controls air mixture and idle during warm up. The pumps are loud. I change mine with a dealer OEM and it still makes noise, but it at least registers the proper fuel left in the tank.

Well I just changed my pump, it is noticibly quieter and running better. I also opted to change my filter. It cut the noise even more. One note. The fuel will run out even if the ignition is off, SO have the filter nearby or kink the rubber line with visegrips. Van is massively quieter and starts better. You will have to put the strainer on pump before putting it in the sending unit.Save the rubber pump body washer as well.
