Ok everyone, part 1 of the project was a success. We have chosen the 6th generation Civic (1996-2000) as our candidate.

Keep in mind that we have $20,000 total to build this car. So when posting your candidates for a car, keep price in mind. Ideally, I'd like to take a stock car for the sake of the project.

please post a pic, description, price, and distance from atlanta.

our location is Atlanta, GA.. find the zip hit www.autotrader.com and lets get goin' on part 2 ! :D

either the coupe or hatch would, and the coupe is the cheaper of the 2

Wait a second, are we keeping the engine in the car, or going with a swap? If we are swapping, we may go with a b16, in which case buying a 99-00 Si would be simpler and possibly cheaper? (Ok, probably not cheaper, unless labor charges factor in to the swap.) Im assuming we just want a "shell", bare bones car to work on.

the direction of the project depends on what everyone wants. I think that generally, we are going after a "shell" car, so that we can spend our money wisely for the best possible outcome.

well..you see piscorpio - we're building this car like an average Newbie would.

Most people start out with a bone stock car..with a motor..and then decide to mod it.

Plus we can hypothetically "sell" the motor for like...$200. :D

I'm goin' for that one unless someone finds anythin' cheaper.

I think Im looking at the same one:

1997 HONDA CIVIC EX, black w/grey cloth int., 4 cyl., 5 spd., pw, pdl, cruise, tilt, sunroof, am/fm cass., CD, a/c, ps, pb, exc. cond., 169k mi., very clean & dependable car, $4350, 770-732-8656.

That seems to be the winner, if we just want cheap. I think perhaps we should consider a 99 Si, if we could get it for less than 16000, we'd have all disc brakes already, a nice new body with nifty spoilers, etc. Not to mention a B16, which we could use, or get this, we could sell the b16 in favor of something bigger. That alone would knock a couple grand off the price of the Si, what do you guys think?

VTEC_boi
01-06-2002, 08:20 PM
Well..that would only leave us with about...6Gs (4 + 2 for the B16A)

Whereas w/ this one we buy it for 5Gs. Leaving us with 15Gs left. For a motor, rear disc conversion, rims, a front lip (like..$200 for a clean Civic R one), and etc.

Plus...we can do DIY mods like clear headlamps and such.

Also..hypothetically..the newer cars have higher insurance (especially the Si). So it's cheaper, i'm guessing, to go with the 97 EX.

well we're looking at a $4300 EX coupe vs. a $16,000 Si coupe

B18C1 in it (170 hp) and we are only at maybe $8,500 vs. a $16,000 Si coupe (160hp)

strap on an AEM EX rear disc conversion and we now have a $9,500 EX vs. a $16,000 Si coupe

low compression pistons and a revhard stage 3 turbo kit (+ ~225hp and 395lbft) and we are at about $16,500 w/ nearly 400hp and 550lbft vs. a $16,000 Si coupe

Oh, and my vote goes for the coupe!

Hey another thought occurred to me just now, if we want to do this right, we must budget some of our spending money for one important thing.....dyno time. You have to figure without a dyno, its hard to tune the car to make it the ass kicking ride we want it to be. So how much does dyno time cost, and about how much should we figure our ride will need?

Well...the EX is cheaper and 22 miles is pretty close.

Plus..we're guaranteed certain "creature comforts" with the EX (as well as VTEC wiring..making the swap easier).

As well as the fact that the EX has just as large of an aftermarket.

And cheaper leaving more money for a turbo and other mods.

Or $400 could be spent on getting a nice, clean hatch instead of an everyone-has-one coupe (don't kill me coupe owners...I was only making a point!). I like the 6th gen coupes just as much as the next guy, but I happen to like hatches more.

But I understand what you're saying, VTEC_Boi. Let's just pick one! I'm ready to move on. *tapping foot impatiently*

CivicRacerX

I think the coupe got the votes because while they may be more common, I personally think the coupe looks a lot classier than the hatch. A hatch is great if you're just looking to build the fastest, lightest drag car you can make, but no matter how many mods I see on a Civic hatch, it always looks like a cheap little toy car to me. I respect people who choose to tune their hatch, and there are certainly plenty of them around that could easily smoke my coupe, but as far as just looking clean and cool, I think the 6G coupe is by far the winner. I love that Honda made the SI a coupe for 99-00, I'm trying to sell my EX and buy one right now
