Posessed 96 LT1 Electrical Problems

this car is a strong runner, minus need for new transmission. recently it started acting strange. the car will idle and drive fine, to almost any speed the trans will allow, but as soon as i step on the brake pedal the car sputters and dies. this also happens when i turn on the parking lights or driving lights. the interior lights come on fine, and even the old "ticket writer" light works good. the voltmeter on the dash reads closer to 18, and doesnt float down too much before the car dies. it moves a little, yes, but not a signifigant amount that would show battery drainage. i just started having this problem on friday after going grocery shopping and putting all of the groceries in the trunk. the car drove fine until about 4 blocks away from my home. the dash doesnt go dim, and all of the power options work fine without killing the engine. the problem is specific to the lights, and more so to the brake lights.

any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
thanks

check your connections on all your electrical. get some new fuses. its probably not draining your battery thats why it doesnt show up on your pannel but your probably shorting out and your car isnt getting any power from the batt.

Check for chaffing on the wiring harness in the trunk. If there is a power wire touching metal, it may do that.
Maybe you nailed the wires with the groceries. I know that on my caprice, the wires are very close to the trunk hinge on the passenger side. I always watch how I put things in the trunk because of that.

Open your driver's side door. Where the dash meets the door frame, there is a small panel. The fuse block should be there.

yeah, i found it the other day... i just remembered cause my friend had a 90 caprice and we did his fuses before. well, i pulled the ext lamps fuse and it ran fine until earlier today when i was out. i think the tourque converter went out, horrible noise from trans area

BurnM is on the right track, make sure you check the ground strap (braided copper wire) on the left side trunk hinge. Unscrew it clean it with sandpaper on the body contact point and wire contact point screw it back in and then see if it doesnt go away.
